Have recently fallen in love w/ the "naked" style...thinking about adding to the stable.
I test rode both the Ducati Monster 696 and the Aprilia Shiver 750 last weekend.
The Aprilia's drive-by-wire system is interesting. Also, you can tell it has more torque but it doesn't seem to be down low enough in the RPM range so that it makes a difference.
The "Duc" has it in styling and handling and I'm leaning more in that direction but I've read several posts that say it's underpowered and easy to get bored with.
I'm not looking to run this thing on the track - mainly just to split commuting time w/ the TBA and maybe for day trips to the mountains. Both bikes seemed to have enough power for me but this was my first ride on a sport bike of any kind.
Question: are there any other mid-size (and most importantly, mid-budget!) nakeds I should be looking at? Anyone have keep in their stable and willing to provide input? Looking to keep it to about $10K OTD.
Thanks!

A friend of mine has a Monster and I think he is still a little scared of it after a couple years. He seems to think it has plenty of power.
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

I'm with Ed. Seems very little bad (as in nada)has ever been said about the Triumphs. I, too, love the Monsters - But they and the Aprilia are Italian and not unlike myself, can be maintenance intensive. I love the sound of a Duc running through the gears, but, they sound like a tin can full of upolstery tacks at idle. IMMHO, you'll also get more balls for your buck with a Triumph.

I test rode a Suzuki Bandit 1250 earlier this summer. Nice bike, fast, bulletproof reputation for reliability and you can load it up with hardbags and turn it into a sport tourer. Very inexpensive too.

It's not mid-sized. It's not new. But it is $8750. A 2006 Rocket III on Cycletrader.com, 15k miles. Just a thought.

Well I think I'm going to go for the Street Triple R. Unfortunately it now looks like I'm going to be trading in the America (wife, mostly). Clinton Cycles is offering me a pretty good trade-in value on the America. I'll have some bits and pieces up for sale in the classifieds probably next week.
Thanks to everyone for your collective contributions to this site. It's been a good ride.

Orange or grey? If the R had been out I'd have one instead of my Tiger. Totally different bikes, but that Street Triple R is so freakin sexy, especially in that flat orange.

The Street Triple seems like a small bike to me, but if it fits you, then you can't go wrong.
Personally, I would probably go with a used 2002 - 2004 S3 955 & keep the America.

Ended up with a 2010 Street Triple R (orange). It was tough giving up the America. Will post some stuff in classifieds when I have the chance to take pictures ... sissy bar, lighting, Haynes manual, etc.
Thanks again everyone. Very happy to stay in the "family"

Bought a shiver in May 09,put about 7,000 miles on it so far and what a blast. I live in Salt Lake City which is very close to some great canyon roads where this bike is at its best, really wanted to get another Triumph but ergonomics and looks kept me going back to the Shiver. For sure the TBA and Shiver are two completely different bikes and i would not sell either one, just different bikes for different rides.
