I have a 2008 America. About 2 months ago I noticed what appeared to be oil seeping out of the top hose at the top crimp on the left side of the oil cooler (sitting on the bike). Took it to the dealer and they agreed it was oil. It looked and felt oily. They replaced the braided hose and cruch washers.

Just got back from a 1800 mile trip and while cleaning the bike I noticed what at first looked like the same stuff seeping out of the same crimp hose connection, however this time it doesnt feel oily. It seems like a very fine powder. Took a little dab and it doesnt taste like oil, actually no taste at all. Kind of feels like brake dust but how could brake dust get up there? Noticed it just very slightly on the inside of the other top hose also.

The bike is still under warrenty so could have the dealer look at it again but I am now beginning to think it isnt a leak.

I have pictures that I could e-mail, but I have not yet been able to put pictures here.

Sorry for the long post.

Mike

Since it is under warranty, just see if the stealer can figure it out. And stop eating stuff you find on your motor, just because it's powdered doesn't make it a doughnut!

Thanks for your reply, Yes, I will take it to the dealer again. I just am stymied as to why this started happening. The bike has almost 18,000 miles on it now and I never noticed the problem before a couple months ago after a 7000 mile trip.

I keep the bike as clean as I can and I thought that maybe I have cleaned it off before it had a chance to show itself.

Maybe this is a natural build up area for road grime or something.

You going to tell me you havent tasted oil just to check?

Thanks again,
Mike

Well I for one will tell you I haven't taste tested for motor oil. Now I can't say that for gasoline although the taste part was purely incidental.

Could be road dust sticking to some residual oil from before, road dust has no flavor...

Yeah, but they replaced both braided hoses and connectors, guess it was all one part # for the top hose dealy. Should'nt have had any oil residue on it.

It sure looks like a slow kind of weapy seep but this time it's not oily tasting. Sure wish I could post a pic, but neither the wife or I could figure it out.

Thanks for the replys, guess I'll stop cleaning and take it to the dealer tomorrow. Guess I kind of wondered if this was a normal dirt collection area. I only noticed it after long trips.

Thanks again

Mike

I get road grime build up on mine...on the parts that face inside most cause I dont usually wash in there when I do wash the bike.

I have never had the urge to taste it though

If you don't get the fitting and the crush washers aligned perfectly, and tighten the banjo bolt down carefully and to the correct torque, it will seep. The airflow from riding will spread a fine film of oil and that will in turn collect road dust and grime. Been there, done that. There's a tiny recess in the top of the cooler and if I remember correctly, on both sides of the line banjo fitting. The washers must seat perfectly in those recesses to seal completely.

It's not as bad as one would think. The organics kinda taste like chicken.

Took it to the dealer this morning. They decided it was seeping at the crimp to the braided line. This line has been replaced once for a leak at the very same spot. They ordered the second top oil cooler line and crush washers and will replace.

After I got home I checked the torque and it slipped at exactly 45 Nm on the 2 banjo bolts that I could get a socket on, but the third one (where it is leaking) I couldnt get a socket on, so I kind of calibreated my elbow and used wrenches and it feels about the same as the others.

This is no big deal, it is just causing a little extra cleaning about once a month. But what the hey, they arent suspossed to leak at all...right.

Dino oil does have kind of a fried chicken taste to me, but syn oil is kind a cross between plastic, radiator fluid and fly swatters...my closest guess.

Thanks for the tips all.

Mike

Unless you run over a dounut first, or some fresh road kill. They're both sweet to the taste, but road kill insites an involintary gag reflex.
