What are you guys using for packing your mufflers.Where are you getting it from and what does it cost?

you probably need to explain what kind of muffler you're referring to.
Mine are stock and i don't pack them.

Uhh,ok...any motorcycle aftermarket muffler that have a repackable baffle.
I dont believe it matters what brand of pipe you are using.

Moose Racing This is what I use in my Thunderbike pipes. Dinqua (Pat) located this awhile ago and passed it on..... I went to K-Mart and got some SS picture hanging wire to tie it in place on the baffle.

Dale, that owns Specialty Spares recommended Moose Racing material noted above. They use tape to wrap theirs but wire might work better. I used tape on my redo. The main thing is it should be 4-stroke material not 2-stroke.

FMF sells two, quality proven packing materials (pink and white) on-line. I think their $6-$15.00, depending on type.(so does J.C.W.) DO NOT use thermal, fire resistant construction packing (insulation, commonly called "Bear Hair"), it works quite well, for about a month. It wont stay together, disintergrates and blows out.

Any idea what type of tape(electrical,duct,packing)?
How long should I expect it to last before repacking again?

Specialty Spares uses 1.5" masking tape. Tape lasted about as long as the packing did. I will probably redo about every 10-12K miles. If you repack before it starts coming apart it is a lot easier.

I repacked with fiberglass once and it didn't last -- redid this last time with stainless steel wool obtained over the internet (ebay?)
Anyway, the steel works "ok," but will lost longer than the glass, which didn't last 3k miles . :P

Ed, I just re-wrapped mine with new material just like stock. I'm thinking about adding another layer- did the additional layer make a noticeable difference in noise level?

Any packing supplied for the purpose should last a long time, but its life is based on mileage (use), not time.
The wiring or taping is only to keep it wound tight for installing into the can, nothing else.

Bob, I think it tamed it a little more than the original packing but to be honest the original was pretty crispy so it could have just been the fresh packing that was in play. Doesn't seem to have gained any volume, though, in over 6~8K miles so maybe it did help some.

I used their pink stuff to pack an aftermarket muffler for my little Honda. Works good... I held it in place by wrapping it with a light gauge wire. Tried fiberglass insulation... worked for about 15 minutes.

Fibreglass 4-stoke baffle material should last quite a while. Mine didn't start noticeably changing until after 12K miles. I redid them at over 16K. RMF does make 4-stroke baffle material that is different. I'll probably try it next time or get some to wrap over my just redone ones. I just wanted to quieten down the higher range a bit.
