I have over 37000 miles on my bike and have never hit the rev limit so I don't know what to expect. I have the stock air box and stock jets. Removed the end baffle a long time ago. I very rarly go over 6000rpms. I once run up through the gears and the tac. read about 74000 and never hit the rev limit. Now, the other day I wanted a little more sound out of my bike so I drilled two 1/2" holes in the next baffel. I hit the road and opened it up to see if it had any effect on the power. I ran it up to about 7000rpms and it started to cut out. Like it was running one one cyl. Is this the rev. limit and my tac. is now off a little or am I running out of gas on the top end? Any thoughts or ideas?

It does almost sound like it's a fuel issue. What you describe sounds similar to what happened to me when my hidden fuel filter was clogged, on the highway it would cut out one one side or another as it was short on fuel. That all being said, my limiter has kicked in at different rpms on different dyno runs, and they have been several hundred rpms apart. When my limiter kicks in on the street, rarely does it just bounce, it usually shuts the motor down for a few seconds.

Igniter.
Don't want to bum you, but it's a common problem and one cylinder cutting out is a classic symptom.

74000 rpm

(I know it's just a typo )

Alan,

What is the year and model of your bike? Early Americas would hit the rev limit at around 7100 rpms while the Speedmasters would reach 7500. It sounds like you are hitting the limiter though like roadworthy stated. I've had the same happen to me at times where the rev limit appears to change a bit.

Since the only thing you have done is drill a couple of holes in your baffle, I don't think it is fuel related but make sure and check your fuel filter. Don't forget, as you reduce restriction in your exhaust, more air will flow and a larger jet size will eventually be needed. Are your snorkels still installed? If they have been removed, I would rejet.

I find that my tach is no more accurate than the speedometer. Allowing for speedo error, the rev limiter is at 7400 RPM worth of road speed, but the tach only says 6800.
