Got sent this by email today this is one of the guys that had just joined "bonnevilleamerica" and turned up after one post on the site......

Quote:

Dent, a very small village (only two pubs and one shop – but about four churches) off in a secluded valley with very few roads, just away from the main touristy route of Hawes and Sedburgh. The type of place that attracts the serious kind of fell walker on a coast to coaster rather than the average weekend rambler. Also, on last Friday evening, under several inches of water.

I had pretty big reservations about going on this one. My time with the Triumph Rats had ended rather contentiously. Apart from a few sterling exceptions I found most Triumph riders to be interminably dull, slow, weak bladdered numpties more likely to have a Jag and a Horse box on the drive than two broken bike frames and a rusty farmers Landrover. (Or ‘project’ as we’d call it)

I also had reservations about the weather. Rain had settled in and was going to stay for quite a while. The lake district is not the place to go if you want to avoid rain. It does tend to be rather wet up there. Hence all the Lakes. For these reasons and many more (apathy, neglect, memory etc.) I had not packed or done a thing to get ready again and it was already half past four on Friday before I really made my mind up to go. I didn’t want another bad mood to get started again, I remembered last Saturday at the Caveman Bash and how easy it had been to cheer up amongst the bikers so I figured what the ******, how bad can it be, and anyway I can always come home Saturday if it ends up being rubbish.

The Laundry tree was still bare so packing was even quicker than last time out. Just gathered together the three least smelling Triumph T Shirts, a few sets of socks, a pair of jeans and a fleece for the evening. I had no spare underpants - which was going to be a problem. I took a few beers and a bit of food but was otherwise pretty lightly loaded. Waterproofs were on over the Leather.

Now Dent is not far, over the hills, yes, but far away ? no. I’ve used Sedburgh as a ciggie stop when going up to the North East before so it’s really not far at all. I took the A6 from St Michael’s on Wyre up to Lancaster, through Lancaster and out on the normal road to Devil’s Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale. By the time I got there I was already bloody soaked. New seat or not my bum was wet and thanks to gear changes my left foot was also sloshing around in it’s own puddle of cold water. I really needed a wee so I had to stop. I knew that was going to make things worse as I stood up, the water ran down the back of my legs and my boot squelched even more. Buggery. Still back on and about forty minutes later I was in Dent. Some very challenging roads in that area, especially with standing water and lots of gravel around. Had to be taken easy, I even pulled over to let a local in his car pass me, I was driving a bit like a Granny.

It did not stop raining when I got there. I could see where the bikers were camped so I didn’t need much help, but I couldn’t see where to sign in, so I wandered around in the pouring rain for ages before thinking bugger this, just get the tent up and sort out afterwards. I saw the little brown tepee that Andy and Paula used at the Leeds Lions do, there was a space (just ) next to it so I crammed my small bungalow down into the gap. At that precise moment, now I had a permanent shelter, it stopped raining, well of course it did !

I changed into jeans and swapped my socks for a less squelchy pair. The boot was still wet, but I could walk that off. My pants were still soaked, and that was very uncomfortable, but I knew I’d soon warm up after a beer or three. I wandered through the village and saw the back of the Sun Inn. The name was welcome enough on its own, but after wandering in and looking around over the heads of the throng in the public bar I could not see any leathers or smell anything like the wet dog smell of a well travelled biker so I slipped out again.

The George & Dragon was discovered just a few yards up the road. This had its own micro brewery attached so I could see it was going to be more popular. Indeed when the back room was found there was the rather obvious mass of leather wearing, wet dog smelling bikers at last. There were several beers on tap, many with specific gravities and ABVs, so I should say several Ales on tap really. I started with a rather rich porter that went down very well. I met up with Andy and Paula and told them with some confidence that I was camped next to them. Then it was time to socialise. Very easy to do in the rain, all the smokers were trying to occupy the same three square inches of space under the door lintel. Very easy to break the ice when someone is stood on your feet. There were several complaints about the weather and how vicious it had been and how long it had lasted. I felt I had to comment (being British what else was I likely to do ?) so I reminded them that this was, for the lake district, merely damp. They would know when it was wet when cars were being pushed sideways down the street and trees were floating past – then it would be Lake District Wet !

They really were an amenable bunch these Triumph riders. There were southerners, northerners, Irish and Scots all together. Laughs were had and stories were told. Even though I had only put one post on the forum it had been read by quite a few so I already felt ‘in’ with this lot. Andy had been in the bar since about four thirty and was well past his limit. Given that his limit is generally one, that’s not much, but he’d probably had four or five so it was definitely time for him to go and lie down (in his little tepee). I could still feel my legs so I carried on drinking. I tried five or six different ales and didn’t really find one that was a favourite. They were all very nice indeed – even the extra pale IPA was full of flavour. Some time later I finally staggered/sloshed my way back to the camp site. I’d still not signed in anywhere and no-one had asked for any money yet. I got into the tent and prepared for a nice snooze and a bit of a lie in.

Wrong. These were not rallyists. They were trying very hard but they were missing some of the basics like not getting up two hours before the tea van opens. The buggers were all up and about before eight in the morning. I don’t do that during the week and this was a Sabbath day (Part Celt, mostly Hippy, but a tincey-incey bit Jewish). I know they all had kettles, but that is for later, luxury, drinks. The first tea in the morning is supposed to be difficult to order and impossible to make. I popped out occasionally and finally met my neighbours. On one side was a very together older guy who knew pretty well exactly what his plans were for the day. In other words he was about twenty times more awake than me. On the other was a nice friendly couple (he had a scruffy beard so I had to like him) who were not Andy and Paula. They had ditched the rather poor little tepee and got a proper three man dome tent and were further down the field next to her car. But I wasn’t to know that !

The Sun Inn has a little hatch out the back where they serve tea coffee and bacon butties. This didn’t open ‘till 9 or 9:30 so I had ages to wait yet. I eventually did get myself together, dressed like I meant it and went for brekkies. I was fairly leisurely enjoying an early chat with the neighbours and explaining that my tent was only on top of theirs (in places) because I thought their tent was someone else’s. They were forgiving and happy people (I told you he had a scruffy beard) and just thought it was a bit funny. I’d obviously not disturbed them in the night then. As I wandered back, still rather trance like, finishing my tea I saw everyone else getting leathers on and some already had bikes started. I’d been just about to ask someone what the itinerary and plan was, but now it was pretty evident, they were going on a ride-out around about.....now !

I dived into my tent and changed again. I was rushing and sure I was going to forget something, but I wanted to be with the lead group (they are least likely to get lost in my experience) so I couldn’t dither. I decided, yes it was a decision, I decided that I wouldn’t take my waterproofs. I didn’t have a bag to carry them and I did not want to put them on. Too hot and stuffy and too restrictive unless they are needed. I just hoped for the best. Got on Bonney, one, two and crack, pop-bang and we’re off !

Now apparently Paula was not quite as ready as me, and as a result Andy missed the ride-out. This was going to cause a few tensions later on, but for now I was unaware. It was a few stops before I noticed Andy wasn’t in our group but I was hoping he could catch up since he knew the published route and we were trying to stick to it.

The route was rather splendid. Dent to Sedbergh, up to Kirkby Stephen, across to Middleton on Tees, down to Barnard Castle, up the big hill to the Tan Hill Inn (where the two ‘pet’ sheep had a ball scratching themselves on the bike frames and stealing beer) down (via Buttertubs Pass) to Hawes, out to Ingleton and back to Dent. A round trip of about one hundred and five miles. As you can image with a load of Bonny riders we were stopping regularly for fuel. Quite ****** regular. On the subject of the bikes though, I had to be impressed. I have never ridden either the Speedmaster or the America but looking at their sloping front forks and the lazy seat with forward foot pegs, I’d always imagined they were a bit soft, a bit unwieldy and certainly not likely to be as confident or just plain nippy in the corners as the straight up Bonny. I was wrong. They were very capable of keeping up a good pace even in the ‘tricky’ bits. On this route there were mostly tricky bits. Nary a white line was seen in the road, most was single track with dual carriageways only used by necessity to get quickly to another good twisty bit. It was a ****** of a good ride and I am sorry Andy missed it.

Riding in about sixth place or so, my mirrors showed a continual line of little headlights strung back like Christmas fairy lights. There must have been over forty of us together at some points and the noise was just terrific. All the different combinations of open pipes, short pipes, slash cut or turn out or baffled or not – just about every engine noise a two cylinder Trumpet can make was represented that day. In case that got boring there was a Rocket III with a three into one slash cut baffle-less pipe that was a small bomber squadron on it’s own. At one point I had dropped back. Passing through a village the string of bikes was that long that by the time I rode through nearly all the residents were out for a look-see. When we stopped at Hawes, which is a northern Mecca for bikers, we took up both sides of the road in front of the chippy and the big cafe with the tables outside. I’ve never seen that before, a single group rode in, took over the town and then (after tea, cake and a widdle) all left together. It was mayhem at the Hawes petrol station though. These are service pumps that mere customers are not to touch. Well with forty bikes to feed that idea went out of the window. After a while we helped ourselves and honour alone meant we paid what was due. There was one faller that caught us by Hawes. One of the Rocket IIIs had gone over on some gravel. Low speed and well anticipated the engine bars took all the impact and saved the rest of the bike. Very lucky with the level of damage, only marks were on the bars and even that looked like it could be nealed out. Rider and Pillion were fine.

Apart from a few vey light showers we got very lucky with the weather. I felt particularly lucky as I had no waterproofs with me. After the ride it was time to eat and chill a while. Sat in the tent having a little doze the rest of the afternoon passed by quite care free. I can’t remember what I ate, probably just bakery fare and noodles. I’d brought the normal four pack of Guinness with me, but since the beer in the pub was so nice I’d not cracked into them yet. Like I said, the rest of the afternoon passed by quite care free....

That evening in the Pub it was much like the night before. The beer was excellent and the company was of the highest calibre. A good time was had chatting to the guys that I now recognised better from the run. Another rally in Halifax was sorted out (Headless in Halifax a local MAG do on 4th-5th September) and a few conversations about bike engines. The Prizes were given out. A guy from Lewis won the furthest travelled and the ‘best bike’ was an all chrome American. All chrome. Chrome chain cover, chrome fenders, chrome engine covers, chrome forks, chrome tank and more chrome dripping off every accessory. It looked ghastly, and to say it was nearly as old as my Bonnie it only had about twelve thousand on the clock so it was barely run in.

This time I retired fairly early – though I did check it was past ten to ten – and went to try and catch up on some sleep. It was again very early in the morning (around six to six thirty) that every bugger was up again. Have these guys never heard of weekend lie ins ? Again the tea and butty hatch was not open for hours. So I packed up between rain showers. Having finally got some tea and a bacon butty inside me I was ready to set off. We were warned not to go too near Devil’s Bridge as the police were on patrol there looking for noisy cans, small number plates, that kind of important policing that lets you sleep easy at night.... so we arranged to meet up at the lay-by near Caton. Unfortunately Paula must have missed that as she stopped at the Bridge, so Andy got stopped by the police as he went looking for her. Luckily he wasn’t on the Chop so he got away with it. I just rattled past without looking in the direction of the cops so I don’t know if they tried to wave me in or not. They were mostly preying on sporty bikes though.

Apart from one heavy shower that waited until I was just off site to start – and which I hid under a tree from because I was sick of riding in the wet – the rest of the journey was quite good. I did the full route back through Lancaster and down the coast road by Glasson Dock and Pilling. I was actually home in time for that weekends racing so perhaps early starts do have some advantage ? Well NO they don’t I had the race taped anyhow and I wanted a lie in more than I wanted an early start. Still, once again no-one had asked for any money for the camping so I did quite well out of it all.

Not a rally, not really rally-ists but good people on the world’s greatest motorcycle in a fantastic location with locally brewed Ale. So yes, it looks like I will be doing that one again.

Still to come, three ten-to-tenners tents in the same field at Nuke the Monkey.

Then the Hebden Bridge Rats do in Halifax (which I’m just about to set off to).

Then possibly the Bulldog Bash with special guests MotorHead

Chill

Introduced myself already...but please count me in on the Dent Rally...saw that you were thinking of touring the Lakes one day...Used to Live in Windermere and was a National Trust Warden (10 years) and a tour guide at one time....so know the area well if you need any help planning a ride, stops, views etc...though I guess a lot of you will know the Lakes well as it is...so no problem if you are sorted

My America is on the way and will be delivered on 23 October...my part 2 test is this Wednesday...but I should hope I will have past my test for the Dent Rally well I hope I will

Anyway there ya go...

Hi Derek so whereabouts are you in the UK, we usually get a good turnout for this meet, but we also have to put up with the lousy weather. But one thing is for sure we have a brilliant time......

The run out is not set in stone yet but it has been talked about before Hardknot and Wrynose passes and then back over on the ferry to Windermere..........

Yeah but only if they can fit in the field with all the rockets.

How do we keep updated about this bike run then? My mrs birthday is on the 16th, so it's going to be a contentious one! Where do we meet? Sorry not read all the thread. Any of you guys got any aftermarket exhausts, I know this isn't the thread, but wanted to ask specifically UK persons. Thanks.

We have various meet points throughout the UK, and the major one is at LANCASTER SERVICES on the M6 just past the M55 turn off

The majority of us on here Dylan use aftermarket pipes, I use the TORs, which I have drilled out and some use pipes which have been imported from the US and some use this company in the UK

If you want any more information or to just look over last years meet and pics CLICK HERE or just ask away........
