My best guess is that Ikon has a slightly different 'progressive' spring rate in their design and that accounts for the extra inch. (Insert obvious joke here). I put a set of Ikons in my buddy's Bonnie and the improvement was the same kind of handling upgrade as putting the Progressives in my America.
I haven't ridden both brands on the same machine so I don't know how the Ikons compare to the Progressives. The Progressive brand replacement springs are an exact fit and that makes for a seamless swap. For me, front spring replacement is the best bang-for-the-buck handling improvement you can make.
