This is the sun's birthday i thank You God for most this amazing day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today, and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing any--lifted from the no of all nothing--human merely being doubt unimaginable You?

Just for the record, the correct spelling of Derek's on-line name was "Sal Maglie". I asked Derek about it one time, and he said Sal was a pro baseball player back in the 1950s that some of his family members followed. If you're interested in learning about Sal, the website address below has info on his career. Not a big deal, but I'm sure Derek would want Sal's name spelled correctly in this thread. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=maglisa01

Kent - I noticed the misspelling too. I think it was a typo on Dwights part - and not intentional at all. Becky

What a sad day. Never met Sal Magie face to face, but he was one of the only American based TBA members who would often converse with me about the beautiful game and the mighty Arsenal.
RIP Derek. You will be missed by many.

I never know what to say in such happenings. In the traditions of my ancestors, he would now be in a place called summerland where everything is just as you would like it. Dogs are all friendly, motorbikes always start on the first kick and only run out of fuel when you would want them to. Even Lucas electrics and Smith and Sons radios work there. You never drop a nut while trying to thread it on a bolt, and you always have the right spanner in your pocket.
Well, Dereck, if that's where you be, stop by the pub and say hello to the mild mannered Irishman in the corner talking about his days on the Liberty ships, that would be my father.

This is beyond what I am able to deal with today. I really enjoyed Derek and Lindas company at SWTF I & II. You could see just by watching them what they meant to each other. I cannot begin to express how sorry I am for your loss Linda. Derek, I know you thought Hwy 92 was one of the best rides in Colorado and since I have no desire to be at work today, I'm off to make that run up 92 over Black Mesa. This ride's for you buddy.

SO very sorry to see this. I remember Sal being here from way back when. I loved his sense of humor, and he always seemed to really care about this site and those on it. I had hoped I would be fortunate to meet up with him someday. RIP Derek

Please do not freak out. I am Derek's wife, Linda. His friend, John showed me how to get on the board. I want to thank everyone for your heart felt wishes and prayers. I did not realize how many lives he touched until this tragedy. To update you all on his "baby" (speedmaster 03), John and another friend, Billy, got her up and running. John thinks Derek would have been more than pleased with the modification. John is going to ride it to the memorial Wednesday at the Territorial and I am going to be a passenger. My soul was ripped from me that day, but life must go on and he would not want me not to be on a bike. Ride safe and keep the shiny side up. Ride and celebrate life for him. Linda Mosher

Linda, I don't know where you got the strength to write that but WOW! I didn't know your husband... I am far away and have only been 'here' a short while. But I am so touched by the love, respect and courage that I don't know what to say. Bless you for your huge heart, and may all who knew this obviously wonderful man find peace in knowing he made such a difference. My (our) thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
With deepest respect and care, Keith

I'm still preoccupied by this and Rossmeyer's accident (doesn't help that I still have visions of Freedom's accident in my head). In both cases they weren't wearing helmets (not that helmets would've saved either--but you never know) and in both cases the authorities say, essentially, they weren't paying attention to what the cagers around them were doing. A local AZ paper is saying Derek failed to yield right of way to the other vehicle. These deaths are so dammed senseless. Be careful out there, kiddies. Just because you think you have the right of way doesn't mean the cages have any less mass. Ultimately they always have the right of way.

Linda - I am very glad that you got on here and saw the outpouring of thoughts here for Derek. I know just from being here myself, that even if we have never met in person, the people on this board care for each other and feel each's pain and loss. And for those of us that have met in real life, the friendships are true. As much as I want to be in Tucson for the Memorial, this new job is going to keep me in Flagstaff. Next time I am down, I will give you a call and we can meet for a cold one to celebrate Derek's life and soul. If you need anything, please let me know. And I am glad to hear that the Speedy is up and running with the bigbore, and that you at least are going to get to ride it. Becky

Sad news indeed, my deepest condolences to Linda and the rest of Derek's family. I guess we've been fairly fortunate that we haven't lost any members prior to this in the 6+ years that the board has been up (that we or I've heard about, anyway). RIP Derek.

Linda,
I am Thanassis from Greece, currently travelling around Europe with Dwight. He immediately told me the terrible news as I was standing near him at the time he got it.
Just to let you know that Derek touched people beyond the shores of the US. I had an occassional but ongoing (several years) off-line communication with Derek about various things. In fact, the boots I wear (Cruiserworks) on my longer tours were both Derek's suggestion and subsequent intervention. There is also a phrase he used (about birthdays) that I found witty/appropriate and have adopted for my own use.
We had always said we would definetely meet when I finally made it to the US.
A good man. My respects. Thanassis

Linda. Me and my wife Anki were so shocked and saddened by the terrible news while in Poland at the Euro Rally. We have never met Derek, but as a long-time member of this website it really feels as if you actually know the good people here. You are in our thoughts and prayers...
