I use an inside caliper (dial) to measure the slot inside the chain adjuster bracket. The end of the bracket vs the end of the swingarm. I can take my hands off the bars and I get no wiggle at all. I can take a picture sometime this weekend (of the caliper and method, not riding without hands) if you want.
