For the last 3 evenings, I've pulled up a chair in my garden with camera in hand for the purpose of getting shots of hummingbirds. I spend 1-2 hours each time as they come and go at mach 4 occasionally hitting the air brakes to get a wee nip of nectar from the red flowers in my garden. And I must tell you it is hard to be ready when the moment strikes. I haven't given up on getting the perfect pic but I thought I would share what I have so far. Question...in countries outside the Americas, do you folks have hummingbirds? Oh good, there's nobody else here. I can't decide where to start. Hey you with the camera.
Live to love, love to live.

Those little guys can be fun for a while. I used to put a feeder out until they started fighting over it and playing king of the feeder on eachother. Eventually, they started dive bombing my wife and I when we were sitting outside . The feeder had to go after that...it just got crazy.

Keith, you may still be hunting the perfect picture. But I think the third one is it. Keep it up

Nice pics! And no, we don't have them here. I actually thought Canada was too far north. Now I know better.

Amazing little fellas. And good job with the pics. They would be tough to capture - you must have been shooting really fast exposures (as the grain implies).

OK, no alcohol in the feeder from now on.

When they start playing dive bomb is when you start honing your tennis swing. I suggest using a cheap garage sale racket though.

Keith, Did you take those with your point and shoot or are you running another set up? If you did those with your P&S Im impressed that you even got those little rockets in the frame.
Unless of course your sprinkling bong water on the plants and that slowls the birds down, then thats cheating

These pics are taken with my ordinary digital camera but I am using manual settings. I wanted a fast shutter speed because those birds are so quick and I'm jerking the camera around trying to get them in the frame. And their wings flap at up to 90 times/sec and I was trying to get stop motion shots. Had to increase the ISO setting which explains the grain.

Oh, I know, it's not like we weren't all thinking it...
Just schooling the lurker (I guess newbie isn't exactly correct as he registered 2 years ago), and the newbies who might be watching. Next thing you know someone will post a picture of a Hummer, and I don't mean the SUV.

A hummer in the Summer is worth a splinter in the winter, a sting in the spring or a stall in the fall... Honestly, I have no idea what I'm saying.
Still trying to get the perfect shot. 'Zen and the Art of...' sort of thing.

before we moved, the OL used to have a couple of hummingbird feeders. When the feeders needed a refill, the wee buggars would wait for her to come out and start chirping at her to feed them.
Let's hope there's intelligent life somewhere in space 'cause it's buggar all down here. -- Monte Python
