You are out riding with another person (about the same riding experence as you and normal type roads). They take the lead. You are traveling two lane back rodes with speed limits of 55 mph and they are constantly going 45 to 50 with traffic backing up behind you some flashing their lights and passing both of you when allowed. I have to say some of the people that got behind me made me worry for my safety a little bit(tail gating). It's not that I mind going that speed, I did not feel it was safe for him or me. How should one handle this as to not offend the other person? On the way back in I led. I ended up pulling over because I loss sight of the person. Four cars and another motorcycle later I pull out in front again.

Leave the Harley rider at home next time?
I kid, I kid.

I don't know how about asking the person about it?

"about the same riding experience as you..." Some people do something their own way for years and won't change. If you don't feel comfortable riding with them for whatever reason, then don't. There have been a few times I've shown up for our regular Sunday morning ride and begged off, citing work obligations or something. If there are people that I think are daredevils or inexperienced, I go somewhere else.

I am usually the slowest person in group rides. We usually have plan, and everyone meets up at different points so that the daredevils and speed ahead and us cruisers show up a few minutes later. That way no one feels pressured to keep up, or unsafe.

He shouldn't have a problem with you taking the lead,, you have to think of your own safety as much as his. If he is just as experienced as you, then he will keep up.

I used to ride for years and quit in 97 when my brother died in a motorcycle wreck, I just pick up a bike again last summer, so I am still rusty. I myself prefer to be at the back of the pack, that way I don't feel pushed to take the curves as fast as everyone else till I get back in the hang of things. Funny I don't have a problem going 100+ in a straight line,,lol.

I think you have to find out why he's not comfortable doing the speed limit.

Talk to him. Being comfortable enough to ride with a person yet unable to talk to them seems bassackwards to me.

Maybe he was afraid you could not keep up

If the guy can't stay with ya at a decent speed , I'd find another riding bud . I have a friend that lags WAY back like that , gets caught at lights , aggravating having to pull over and wait on him .

Arrange to meet along the road at various places, then go your own way. Afterall, you are riding a Triumph.

I think he thinks he is doing the speed limit. Have you ever asked him about calibration of his speedometer?

If he won't do the speed limit, he is a danger to you and himself. Friends have those hard conversations. That is why they call them friends.

My uncle and I ride together occasionally. He usually hangs way back, sometimes I can't hardly see his headlight. The biggest problem is in town, where he consistently misses my light, and I have to pull over and wait for him. I only ride with him on the days where I feel realllly patient. In contrast, I thought the group leaders on the midwest rally did a great job with keeping everybody together. Bottom line, some people just don't do buddy rides very well.

I have to wait for my dad a lot, he likes to go about 6 under the limit, and won't take the highway. But then he talks about wanting to take a trip with me somewhere, so I don't know how that would work.

There's at least one in every group. Some days it's me. You need to find less crowded roads.

Around here, you can go 75 on a 55 road and the cars will still harass you. Nothing ruins a good ride more than playing "Where's Waldo?" all day.

I don't know... I with the 'talk to him' camp about riding below limit and safety. Just have a chat about being out there and the threats and safety issues concerning riding style. I believe we all have to evaluate situations down to the second sometimes so this topic is worthy of discussion with your bud. And I agree with others... due to the poor calibration of our speedos he may very well think he is doing the speed limit.

Might be a good idea to ask about speedometer readings. If his seems to read high, find a straight back road with mile markers and fish for the reading that yields a 60 second mile. That will be a good start on working out what speed to run to get the real speed limit.
I found on my America, that the speedometer error is a percentage of true speed from 0 to around 38 MPH, then it is off by a constant amount after that.

i would definitly talk to him.when i'm riding 2 lane back roads i'm always overly cautious of the freakin deer!they are everywhere!so in a 55 doing 45-50 is just being cautious, now when i'm on the highway or main roads i'm always doing a little above the limit, but i know when i'm cruising the country the first thing on my mind is what's gonna jump out in front of me.

Keep track of a riding partner if just the two of you. I agree with the other folks that you need to talk with him and find out why he's riding more slowly. Speedo calibration or other issues might be at the heart of it.

Suggest another riding partner if you can't come to terms on speed and safety. Best of luck!

In the last two weeks, two black bears have been hit here in FL. The last one was a 300 lb'er and caused six vehicals to be involved in a pile up.
Where? Our #3 major multi lane, limited access hwy., I-4!

How would you like to see that, after dark, while out-driving your headlight! ATGATT won't do flip for ya in that one. Vehical behind hears Thump-Thump!

While touring scenic route 63 the other day, a group of V-twinners was leading a very lengthy convoy of passenger vehicles and one trailer truck, at a brisk 34 MPH in a 50.
I yelled out "WTF is your problem?" at least three times in 5 miles, but at 700 feet away, I don't think they heard me.
