I was at the dealer today looking at the new T-Bird. On the way out, I saw a beautiful used (13K miles) 2004 BMW K1200RS for sale. It has EVERYTHING - bags, GPS, custom gel seat with ostrich leather, BMW performance chip, 2-brothers pipes, new back tire, ABS brakes, self cancelling turn signals, heated grips, cruise control, recent full service, etc. The dealer is selling on behalf of the buyer on consignment for $9300 + change.
I took the bike on an extended road test, and it was amazing (after I got used to the very different posture).
I've searched the web for similar bikes, and ones with more miles are even more money than this one. Trouble is that the dealer is offering $2500 for my 2003 Speedy with 9K miles, and I think that's a bit low, but I hate the hassle of selling myself. The other downside is that the insurance would almost triple to $753.00 a year, because the Bimmer is considered a high performance bike, which I have to agree with, having ridden the thing...
Some of you have seen my Speedy at last year's Ozark meet, and you know how well my own bike is outfitted and cared for.
Any thoughts on whether I should pull the trigger on this deal and bid bye bye to my Speedy?
Keeping both bikes is not an option, because I just don't have room for both of them in the garage?

The dealer trade in offer on your Trumpet is insulting. Private sale.

My uncle owned a car dealership in Tennessee for over 30 years and gave me the following advice:
Never trade in your vehicle. Sell it privately.
This coming from a dealer who made a good chunk of his change buying and selling used vehicles. It's not that much of a hassle to sell privately, and you will get much more than what the dealer is offering, so it's well worth your time and effort.
Cheers, Brad

Yeah, that offer would make me an instant ex-customer. If I did (shudder) ever get a Thunderglide, it would not be from him. And then I would would ride by often so he knew it.
The difference you realize by selling it yourself will more then make up for the hassle of so doing.

well as some one who made the jump from my 2002 TBA .. to this style bike AKA 2007 Tiger it's a move I don't regret at all in fact very glad I did it Quote:

and after you ride the K1200RS more and more you find your self riding your Speedy less and less "if you buy it"
and no I don't like what he is giving you for trade on your speedy.. but ****** that is a great price on that K1200RS

If you're really interested in the beemer, see if he's selling any similar bikes to your speedy and find out what his asking price is, then knock $500 off the price and sell it privately.

I actually considered a CanAm Spyder, but I can't get past the looks.
I've always liked the K Bikes.
Goldwings are rock steady, but I've never been into Cadillacs.

Build a bigger garage. I'm in the book. And I charge lots.

If you buy the Beemer, John, you have to lead all the rides at the Ark rally.

I've listed it on Craigslist and in the BA.com classifieds. Reason for sale is too little room for more toys in the garage with the anticipated purchase of a K bike. If you want to see the Craigslist ad with pics, go here: http://littlerock.craigslist.org/mcy/1289940857.html

Well , was in Bentonville the other day and dropped by the BMW shop ( just to brows) and since its inception the K1200S has made my blood boil with desire and it rides like a dream.....I don't know if I could ever part with my Bonnie-A but my Sprint better watch out ! Having bought and regretted in the past , just make sure it is love and not lust.....

After my first marriage, I'm familiar with the love vs lust thing, but thanks for the advice. LOL!
The shop isn't open until tomorrow, so I have another day to think it over. So far, the reviews of this bike have been super positive, and the one I have my eyes on needs nothing and handles incredibly. I HAVE found out that insurance on this thing will be three times what it is on my Speedy, because it's considered a "high performance" bike.
I've had three interested parties in one day write me for more info, so I think I'll be selling it myself as everyone here suggested rather than take the dealer's extremely low ball offer. Whoever ends up buying my bike will be getting a great deal at $4300.

Just got a quote from Dairyland and it's just a few bucks more than I have now on my Speedy. The insurance guy said I was paying for some stuff on my policy which I didn't really have to, since I was covered under another policy I have. Dairyland quoted me $331.00 a year. Affordable.
