50 or more years ago tassels had a purpose. Many thought that the drag from the tassels equalized the front end at speed thus keeping you more steady like stabilizers. It had nothing to do with the tassel but with wind resistence and control.
We all knew that was a crock though and understood the Harley guys put them on to indicate when the bike was in motion.
