I agree, at about 10-11k for a lighter bike maybe 1000ish cc. they would have sold a lot more bikes.

They really don't intend to take folks off of Harley though. I am not sure what they have as a business plan. I like my Kingpin though. I find it superior in many ways to the motor company soft tail except it has a very noisy transmission.

Looks like maybe you have been looking at them. From 04 on they are very solid bikes. Then there is the Vision. I think they made that to compete with the Rocket as weirdest looking bike in the world

And is it just me, but do Victory bikes just seem big? Not bulky, just kinda big boned. Never ridden one to know how they handle.

Victory dealer offerer free demo rides and you don't need the demo truck to do them.

Take a Kingpin, Vegas or Vision for a test ride and you'll be pleased. The Vision, despite its size, handles very well.

Let me know if you can scrape hard parts on a Vision. Good luck!

Ok, allow me to stir the pot on the other “American” motorcycle company, Victory.

Victory marketing is very careful to point out that the bikes are designed and assembled in the good ol’ U.S. of A….THAT’S IT!!! The parts on the bike are 90% Taiwan, China, and Japan.

Still no proof of this 90% BS? Show us a link.

If you can.

The Cross Roads and the Cross Country are lookin' mighty fine.
I want a trunk too though, but the Vision is just not for me.

True. The Kingpin is an excellent bike for long-distance trips.

I'm guessing the Cross Roads and/or Cross Country will be available with backrest, luggage rack and a trunk too.

With at least half again the horsepower and more torque.
(There's a reason HD doesn't publish HP numbers).
With effective balance shaft vibration elimination and an efficient cooling system.
Overhead cams with 4 valves per cylinder.

And a Cross Country looks to list for around a grand less than a Road Glide base (MSRP).

So sorry, HD is not "the real thing". Just a very effective marketing division for obsolete technology.

#1 reason why Triumph owners do not wave at other riders:

They can't be sure that the other rider hates Harleys enough to be acknowledged.

Now why is an objective look at the facts considered hate?
In fact I think Harleys look and sound very cool. The fit and finish is second to none. But really, 64 horsepower out of 1600 CCs?
No thanks.

I should probably stay out of this, but I ain't. Most of the jap companies got their start building copies of Triumph BSA and Nortan twins, Now they all build v-twins. What I am getting at, is copying which is what they do best. The only two "real things" are Harleys with their v-twin and Triumph with their twin. Most everything else is just a copy. I not going get into it with anyone on which is best. I own both, and will not voice my prefaces.

Heh, it has been pointed out before that most of the ribbing between *seasoned* Harley and Triumph riders is good natured and in fun.

I have ridden and like both Harley and Triumph about the same.

Too bad they are both inferior to Norton!

Kinda like saying a Bugatti Veyron is just a copy of a Model A.

It seems that someone had posted before about Triumph building a v-twin before Harley did.

That would make Harley a copy of Triumph.

Cant find anything on Triumph ever building a v-twin, but Zedel built the first one in Switzerland in 1902. Indian built their first one in 1903, but did not mount on a bike till 1907. Harley came out with v-twin in 1908. If any info on Triump v-twins, I would like to read it

Victories are nice , but having friend that have HD and others with Victory's .....the Victory does not compare in quality to the HD , Nice bikes but over priced....agreed that a less expensive Victory should compete with the jap's "wanna HD" crowd. But, what do I know, I'm a Trumpet rider !!!

13- The German subsidiary of Triumph, TWN, produces the world's first V-Twin in 1906, beating Harley Davidson by four years.

Heh, the Triumph branders seem as eager as Harley branders to play fast and loose with the truth while jockeying for pole position.

The first American v-twin was built and raced by Glenn Curtis in 1903.

"The love of high speeds and mechanical devices led the gifted Glenn H. Curtiss of Hammondsport, New York, to become the first U.S. competitor in international air meets and a pioneer in the development of aircraft in the early 1900s. Curtiss began his high-speed career by racing and building bicycles. His next step was to buy and improve one-cylinder bicycle engines. Then, as motorcycles started being developed, he began building and racing them. By 1902, Curtiss was manufacturing customized motorcycles under the trade name Hercules.

Curtiss entered his first motorcycle race in 1902 and although he did not win, his mechanical talents were recognized, and many motorcycle enthusiasts ordered his rugged, well performing machine. In 1903, Curtiss entered two races in two different cities on Memorial Day and won both. The two-cylinder engine that he used to power his cycles soon began to draw attention from motorcyclists and from early aircraft builders as well.

Curtiss continued improving his engines and competing in races. In 1907 at Ormond Beach, Florida, he reached the record speed of 136 miles per hour (219 kilometers per hour) on his motorcycle powered by a 40-horsepower (30-kilowatt), V-8 engine."

US Centennial of Flight

A V-8 powered bike in 1907? Imagine what motorcycling would have become if Curtis had devoted his energy exclusively to bikes!

Yep Leno, everybody wants to be special, so sorting the facts can be tough.

Interesting stuff about Curtiss, I'm sure he had a major influence in motorcycle design even though he focused on aircraft.

Oh. I didn't find anywhere that it said his two cylinder engine was a "V" twin.

Looks like Timothy is still ahead

That's an interesting story on Glenn Curtis, nice work on in the research department!! Maybe the German subsidiary of Triumph, TWN was the first in EUROPE to develop the V-twin, who knows but then again it don't really matter. Back to Curtis... those are pretty impressive numbers for 1903 I should think!

Heh, I'll play!

So you're saying that an American designed the first parallel Twin?

"Curtiss's first experience with aviation came when famed balloonist, Thomas Scott Baldwin, ordered a V-twin motorcycle engine to power a lighter-than-air ship. Curtiss's engine was a success. In 1904, using this early engine, Baldwin's "California Arrow" became the first successful American dirigible."

Curtis Museum

"He [Curtis] had his own castings made and built his first single in 1901. His products wore the trade name Hercules. The next objective was to build a V-twin and go racing."

The Illustrated Directory of Motorcycles, page 114.

Edited to add: I don't have a dog in this hunt as I like Harley and Triumph about the same. (Norton and Indian round out my Famous Four.) I de-badge any vehicle within the first hour of ownership, and I refuse to wear branded gear. I do not identify with any manufacturer's or brand and have spent many hours being amused by those who do.

[ Curtis was real impressive, ahead of his time. From the picture of his v-8 bike, makes me think he was working on the transverse design not a parallel twin. The transversal is still be built today by Moto Guzzi, maybe it is Henry Ford that needs to thank Curtis the most. I know Harley did not invent the parallel v-twin, even most of my Harley books say it was invented in Europe, and discarded as to costly to mass produce. So we are back to Who Did It
