After reading about freedom's fall it got me thinking about being prepared in an accident. How many of you are trained in first aid and carry first aid kits with them while they are riding?

Your local america red cross offers classes. One night then your done. After the yank and the doc had their accident I took the course. That has expired though as I think the certification is good for three years. I did carry supplies after that. Now my first aid supplies amount to some band aides and a cpr mask, as mouth to mouth with a stranger is somewhat disturbing. milfs not withstanding. Pressure bandages are nice to have as well.

To carry a First Aid kit on our bikes is a good idea.

I checked the Red Cross website. Seems like they have first aid/CPR classes pretty regularly. The cost was $85 which doesn't seem too bad. I also read somewhere that you can take courses in accident scene management. I'm not sure what all that class entails, but it sounds useful.

Better to get some training. Odds are more likely you will aid someone you know.

I can't tell you the number of times I have watched folks look on wishing they could have done something...wishing and doing are light years a part and doing is never as hard as wishing and watching.

Several times I was 1st, 2nd or third on scene of an accident. Several times in the company of someone sick and possibly needing help. Couldn't stand not being able to do anything. So I took an EMT basic course years ago. Ive never ran with a service, but maintain certification with continuing education.
This way, I know exactly when to call a Paramedic! And a few little things to help even without a jump bag.

i am a member of an owners club from my 125 and as one of the most likely to attend a meet brigade was sent by club on an emergency first aid course specifically aimed at bike riders which covered treating things like road rash and many other injuries along with the basic first aid but encluded the reccomended way of removing helmet in case of emergency, as most know you would leave it on but at times it does need to be removed and myself and my fellow members found it very interesting and a very worthwhile course.

I've had training in the military but that was 40 years ago.
You guys have me convinced that I need a refresher course. I carry a First Aid kit on my Ultra Classic but have no bags on the Speedmaster.
I wish everyone I ride with knew first aid.

I have my CPR and First Response certification. I get it updated every two years. As an MSF Riding Instructor i have to be, and luckily for me they provide the training every two years. It's a good thing to have and not very difficult to learn. You never know when you may need to help someone. I always hope that i never have to use any of it. But should the need ever arise. I'm ready to step in and do what needs doing.

With regard to carrying first aid kits then it is a very good idea.

However if you are unable to do so please don't be afraid to improvise with what you have around you. Don't worry about using clothing that is not sterile to stop bleeding, as the lack of blood in a person will normally kill them before the scepticaemia.

And finally if you do decide to render fist aid at the roadside make sure the traffic around you is stopped as the emergency services only want to deal with one casualty and not multiples.

The irony is that I had a first aid kit on the trip... back at the hotel room.

Doesn't sound like a simple first aid kit would have done much good for freedom aside from the cut on his chin...

It sounds like you guys did just fine with what you had.

Well, if that nurse hadn't shown up with her first aid kit I suppose I coulda used a piece of shirt to apply to his chin. Didn't have anything else on hand and I'm sure something sterile would have been preferable. She did use up all her gauze, though. Still, he made it through.

I remember quite well from my time in the army, "stop the bleeding, protect the wound, treat for shock." Oh, and "Never try to stuff the innards back in."

First aid and CPR training through my union training center.
I really should have a better first aid kit for the bike, so I will have before my next out of town ride.
