I know this is a motorcycle lounge, but I have always found you all most helpful when it comes to computer info.

My 7 year olds are really getting into this internet thing. I have all their (safe) websites stored in their favorites list, and their computer is in the living room so i can see everything they are looking at, but we all know how easy it is to stray onto a "not for the young" website.

What internet filter do you guys recommend. Preferably something i can download for free and is easy to install.

Any suggestions?

The best filter is the fear that Daddy's gonna whup their butt
if they don't behave.

Best bet Mark, would be to Google it and check the reviews.
I used Net Nanny when mine were younger (my youngest is now 21, so it's been awhile). It seemed to work well. If they needed a site that it wouldn't let them on due some red flagged words or whatever, I could override it and allow it for future access if I deemed it appropriate.

WebWatcher is supposed to be good.

Go with Bills suggestion.. things change so fast it's hard to keep up with what is available. Also, due to the same fast changing landscape of the Internet, nothing is going to be able to keep your kids 100% safe from running across the occasional rogue site. Given that your kids are only 7, I would seriously limit their access anyway. There is no substitute for full parental supervision and a good router that can be set to only allow internet access during certain times of the day when you are sure to be present.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks Bill, Brad. I will look into these you mention. I don't let them use the web a lot, but there are times when were in the room together when they don't like watching what mum and dad are watching and they play games on the Disney, Nogin, Nickolodeon web sites. I don't mind this at all...some of them are very educational. And my son loves the Discovery site. But we all know how easy it is to stumble on to something we were not looking for.

I had a similar problem when my son was 15. He would bring his friends in after school before I got home from work and there would be all kinds of weird programs on the computer that I would have to clean up. Nothing pornographic thank heavens (that I know of), but just games and stuff that would slow down the computer. Finally I told his friends they were not to use the guest site any more.
