The perception around here (Montana) is that out-of-the-area people get ticketed more than locals. A number of years ago I was coming into the edge of town late one night doing 57 in a 45 zone. The Sheriff pulled me over and asked if I knew how fast I was going? "Yes, I was going 57 mph".

Having said that, I tend to be a model citizen in our little burgs, especially school zones. Out in the country they generally to leave you alone, unless your going nuts and creating a hazard. This Triumph behaves itself pretty well on the straight sections, but seems to develop a mind of it's own in the corners. Funny bikes that way? An old Chemistry instructor once said "you pay's your money and you take your chances". I don't remember much else from chemistry, but I always remembered that.

On the subject of speeding i will explain the rules here in OZ, they have fixed speed cameras everywhere, but those cameras are disliked by some citizens with a paint can..... so they now have fixed video cameras (at a greater height off the ground) watching the speed camera..... on top of that they have police cars with cameras that park on the side of the road and sit there until the radio stations start anouncing where they are, then they move to the next location.... also we must mention the highway patrol, the police bike patrol, the decibel meters they test bikes with non-standard exhausts......double demeritt points and fines on long weekends.... the list goes on!

So anyway I had a very fast bike but soon discovered it was no use to me because I was sure to lose my licence any where in first or second gear, so I bought myself a TBA to save my licence...... it has slowed me up and I am getting older and more responsible...... I just wish the police would focus on more beneficial tasks rather than their revinue raising cameras!

TBA, Stainless extractors / drag pipes, 65mm over forward controls, Thruxton needles, 904cc, head ported, lowered 1-inch, Console removed, relocated battery box, Australia.

Hey Christopher
Sounds like the Police over here mate.
Slight differences:
A stop by the law will usually result in being told to change the race cans and take it to a nick to prove it's road legal.
Loud cans / pipes are not (currently!) an endorseable offence - no points and / or fine.

I too have seen speed cameras with paint thrown over 'em.
Other vents include setting them alight and just out-and-out driving into 'em!!

We have the mobile speed cameras too. That's how I got the one and only speeding fine I have.

The funny thing is that most of the cameras face the front of the vehicle so they can snap the face of the driver too.
Great for bikes - race through to set 'em off while flipping the finger

A mate does it every week to the same camera - one week there's going to ba a copper waiting down the road!
He never thought of that 'til I mentioned it - he does ride a Hardley after all ....

Here in the peoples demokratik republik of kalifornia, if you are one of a group traveling over the speed limit, they go for the one driving the most "middle income" car. If they stop a ratty car, the owner will probably not have the money to pay. If they stip a big money car, the owner will probably spend a fortune on a bigshot lawyer, fight the ticket and win just for the victory.

I use one of these.

Best investment I've made in a while. Legal in all 50 states except DC. Check out their trade-in program. Worth $80 if you have an old detector!!

...and Happy Birthday GB!!!

Hey Phil

Shows the extent to how stoopid this country can be.
Radar detectors used to be legal to sell, legal to buy, legal to install, illegal to switch on!

They are legal to use now though.

No, you got nicked because you were speeding.

I like to wind the throttle open as much as anyone, but I try to pick the right time and place to do it. I don't know Gibraltar, but I've got to assume that somewhere with a 30 kph limit is going to be in a built up area, probably with pedestrians about?

If it is, then I'd say you were probably going too fast.

errr simonr the problem is not the built up places but the roads are very narrow no straights really
the place is a three mile long rock and about two miles wide and thats with the reclaimed land
i don't mind the speeding charge what i mind is the discrimination he clocked the spanish car in front but let him go cause they cannot get them to pay fines as they are not resident

Surely all the more reason to be within the limit on such a small lump of rock!!
Doesn't that increase the chance you'll flatten a fellow Gilbraltarian!!!???

Unless of course, you're lucky enough to cop a Frenchie (spit) tourist.

Fair point - does it work the other way around as well? Can you get away with it in Spain?

I got flashed by a speed camera on a French motorway last year but I've not had any dodgy looking letters with French stamps on demanding euros from me

Adey, you must come into Lancashire in Summer, you get an on the spot fine for over loud or illegal cans. I have been told to change my off roadies in a car park at Caton and the bike was not even running...

A few weeks before that I got pulled up at Caton, and told to park in the police car park where they looked at my bike (TT600 at the time) and they told me it was TAXED, Insured, MOT'd and I had a licence to ride it. (BIG BROTHER OR WHAT). They also check the tires and of course the can, where they told me I was one of the few they had stopped that day with Tax and a legal can.

This was all done by a DVLA chap with a laptop sat at a table.

VOSA
Vehicle & Operator Services Agency.
Their's is the name at the top of your MOT certificate.

The new one's are all done on computer (no more £25 for a 'ticket' mate) and if'n you go on-line http://www.motinfo.gov.uk you can check a legit (new style only) MOT certificate.
You can see if it relates to a particular car, date and time of issue etc - you can tell if it's a knock-off or not.

They are also the people you see driving round usually in a Ford people carrier and stopping lorries etc under motorway bridges.

They can impound your vehicle on the spot and, no doubt, give you a number for a good taxi firm to get home .....

i will walk you don't let kids walk you wanna shoot me you shoot me
the cops looked at each other and said don't do it again carry on carry on
but they will take your vehicle and won't get you a taxi you walk or call one yourself
thats a democratic spain

I've heard that the Spanish police have started taking car names more seriously. They will stop you for more than one person in a Fiat Uno or if you don't have exactly 4 in an Audi Quatro.

A Rocket 3 could probably manage 3 people quite nicely, but I doubt a CB400 could handle 400.

It's all about money and always has been. All that public safety propaganda crap is a bunch of bull. Here in Texas they announced Dallas county needed money so they went on a big speeding ticket spree as a fund raiser. Safety belt tickets have gone up from fifty bucks to two hundred plus.
“55 saves lives” What a bunch of crap!

Actually, radar detectors are banned in all "big trucks" commercial vehicles - nation wide, by federal law. Even if its not hooked up and operating it will be seized as contraband in a commercial big rig. (don't ask how I know, I just do!)

El Gato, from what I read in your post you'd like the book Freakonomics, which talks a lot about--among other things--BS "conventional wisdom" and how marketers and "experts" push for product sales that have no impact on safety.
