Long story short...after 18 runs final result is: -power 67.12 hp -torque 54.37 ft/lbs (73.71 Nm) not bad I think will post prointout when will get it a scanned bike: - 2001 Bonneville America 904 - stock airbock with K&N filter snorkels removed - intake snorkel shortened - Keihin CR Special carbs!! - 108 main jet - Epco exhaust been on Dyno last week but would like not to mention results (way too rich) ... after some advise from mechanic went down 7 numbers with main jet difference was huge....in my feelings anyway after riding Thunderbird this morning went for dyno run and first run showed much improvement (61 hp ,125 main jet) but still too rich. CR carbs are so easy to work with and changing jets is 5 minute job, we found 112 mains in workshop and put them on .....improvement again (65hp) but still a bit rich we found 108 mains, put them on and final result as I wrote above 67 hp !!! print looks good mechanic said leave it like that showed print to 4 others mechanics in different garages I know and they are impressed

Looking good Greg! I was wondering why you didn't write sooner. Now I know!

The run looks great, however your print out shows 54.37 max torque measured DIN, 1.03 CF. Please explain the quoted 55.37 torque figure.

My feeling is that most all do it yourselfers that can't do repeated dyno testing end up with way large main jets than they should be running. I have a 904 and have had numerous dyno tests and am still using 125 mains. I do start to lean out above 6K, but the main power range I can't argue with. At 5250 rpm where the torque and hp cross, I'm at just barely under 60. My torque peaks at 65.54 (3408 rpm) and the hp is just under 75 at redline.
I went with the better judgement of D&D Cycles (Pensacola, FL). They said that almost every bike that is brought in people have worked on have too large main jets in them. Even if you are able to get the hp at the very top end it usually hurts the main range everyone should care the most about. Lower the mains and adjust the needles for best performance.

Well done Grzegorz. Those are very nice numbers and your air/fuel is one of the best I can remember. Mind you my memory isn't that flash anyway While you're there, do you want me to put your numbers in the Dyno Table?

I've preached it for several years and Dale at Specialty Spares confirmed exactly what you are saying. I have SS long slash cuts, UNI filter, upper snorkel removed. DynoJet kit with 128 mains, 45 pilots turned out 3.5 turns. I am a bit rich on the top end, but still in range. 145 & 155 mains? A waste of fuel for the open road. But get a dyno done to make sure.

You've got a good point there Bob. I guess all my knowledge has basically come from this website the collective knowledge of all other members. So how about having a look at my last dyno which shows my bike is running rich, and tell me what main jets ( and pilots while you're at it) you think I should use. Btw, I have already taken the shim of the needles and I think 42 pilot jets would be more appropriate. Anyone else who wants to chime in here with there two bobs worth is welcome as well cos I appreciate constructive criticism as long as it can get my bike's air/fuel more balanced. cheers staffo.

on one of my runs air/fuel ratio looked similar mess and we went down with main jets..... I haven't got all prints from every runs unfortunately
in my case we went from 125 to 108 main and its 8 numbers down
I would go 4 numbers down and try how it goes on the road if you happy go on dyno
my Dyno guy had some notes and he advised strait away what we should try (he never worked before on those carbs)

what do you reckon I try 135 mains and 42 pilots?

The fact that you have a Freak instead of the airbox would normally require larger mains than non freak. I would still start by dropping the mains a size or two and going back to the 42 pilots. You can always go back up on the pilot jets after the mains and needles are dialed in if you need to.
I certainly don't consider myself an expert and I also am working with collective information. The D&D guys did wonders with my bike as far as getting maximum torque and power in the midrange and getting the proper A/F mixture.

I'm not an expert and got different carbs but in my case dyno run showed ;61hp with 125 jet and was too rich, then we went down 5 numbers on main to 112 65hp but still a bit rich then down again 2 numbers to 108 main and that was final result 67hp as you can see on my print.
bloke who made my dyno runs is working with superbikes on daily basis and I trusted his knowledge but was a bit surprised that we should go down 5-6 numbers on main jet...we went 7 and is spot on
I would go this way what you said 135 and try different pilot always good to compare result and see maybe something between is right for you

Thanks for your comments Bob and Grzegorz. You know, when I think about it both my A/F ratio charts have been in the rich which is why I need to now experiment a bit more with my settings.
Bob, the only jets smaller that I have at the moment which I could use are 135 which for me might be just a little too small for my liking.
I think now that I have already gone down from 150 to 145 since my last dyno, the next step I'll try is going down to 42 pilots and see how it feels then.
Regarding your comments Grzegorz, like Bob has said already, it appears it is hard to compare settings of those who still have the stock air box compared to pod filters but I think the sentiment is much the same.
cheers staffo

Thought I might as well post my dyno results. This was a tuning exercise so the graph shows before and after. And the numbers are AT THE WHEEL.

Keith,
Could you post your set up? Displacement, needles, shims, mains, pilots, etc etc. Thanks for posting your run.
I'm really beginning to wonder about my seat of the pants jet sizing ability. Full throttle runs, backing off on throttle to notice if bike accels or decels, checking plug colour, comparing to others who have posted is all myself and many others have to go on (no dyno).
I'm guessing I'm too rich. Why do the Bonny riders with 360 engines all seem to run 110 pilots, smaller mains, and more aggressivly tapered needles (Thruxton) but have higher stock HP.....Cams????

Most butt-dyno tuned bikes are jetted too rich on the mains. None of the twins run 110 pilots.

I think it's the cams and the 360° timing that affect the numbers more than anything else. My '01 Bonnie ended up with stock needles, 42 pilots and 145 mains, K&N pods and Emgo reverse cones and it ran like a scalded ape. That said, I always felt my America had more power (torgue) across the entire operating range.

That's probably true enough since the main jet really only comes into play at WOT and few people actually spend much time there. Truth be told, you could run one of our bikes with no main at all if you never got above 3/4 throttle since the needle does the metering up to that point.

Opps I meant 40 pilots and 110 mains.
