I guess you could check AC output of a 3 phase alternator directly, before it is rectified. Typically AC output is converted to DC through the rectifier bridge which is a series of diodes (2 per phase). These might be build into the regulator, but I'm not sure. Never checked AC output on an alternator because you couldn't easily (sealed). DC is really all you need to check.
