It appears that the valve guide has dropped...as this is a press fit part in an alum. head I don't know if this is serviceable...yet

Congratulations on the diagnosis. You may be better off with a boneyard head, though, if you can find one.

It is a press fit...SOOO....I drove the guide out and knurled the out side of it...coated it with RED locktite Bunged up the alum. bore...and drove it back in...hopefully that will hold...for awhile...
as a side note...
Does it mean anything when you look at the mess on your bench and realize that, because it's a long holiday weekend, and all the parts shops are closed making reasembly impossible...that you may as well port and polish the intake while you've got it apart anyway?????...

Make it run however you can, then trade it on one that has a Kohler engine. Those have a real pressure oil system.

OK!!! I know not WHY...yet...BUT
I cracked the head off...AND...the exhaust valve is not seated all the way...there has to be at least 1/32 or so of daylight shining thru the seat....
Also as an interesting note...I found H2O in the cylinder....could have happened while I was blasting heaps of oil soaked grass and dust prior to benching it!

Sometimes quite literally. The fuel pump on my Kohler powered Simplicity crapped out a few years ago. I bypassed it to gravity feed with a marine pressure bulb assist. Hey, when it comes to lawn tractors, whatever works...

Trade it in on a Dixie Chopper, you'll have more time to ride your Triumph.

I just have a hard time believing the valves are out of adjustment if it was running fine, then it wont start.I've seen 'em where they are running fine and then just die in the middle of the lawn due to valve adjustment. Throwing a seat will do it as well, but generally those go when running, so I'd be questioning if it was indeed running when your son last parked it Quote:

I gave up on those B&S and Kohler powered things. I found me an old (1989) John Deere with a 17hp Kawasaki. The thing just refuses to die, and when it does, everything including cylinder sleeves is replaceable/serviceable.

I have a Skag Tiger Cub zero turn with a 19hp Kawasaki engine. They sell them where my wife works. It is pretty much indestructible. Best mower i've ever had and definitely the best engine. Kohler is good though... better than B&S. I have a Deere with that engine. But no match for the Skag.

same here, I bought one from a neighbor for $300 cause it would not spin the blades. I gave him $300 and gave the tractor a swift kick on the deck and zooooom, the blades started spinning. The neighbor put his hands on his hips and said, "well, I'll be darned, the JD dealer told me $800 to fix, but hey, a deals a deal". It's been running strong ever since and I will own nothing but JDs from now on.

All back together...and ....VROOOMMMM!!!!! YEEHA!!! $53.00 worth of parts ($40.00 of it for a magneto I didn't need!) and she fired right up!!!
as a side note...the Cylinder walls looked GREAT especially for a 6 YO machine which gets sporadic care!
