Stuff breaks and you learn from your testers, the customers, in the field. Then you stand behind what is broken. It seems like Triumph does that too on brakes, stalling ect. They sure do stick their heads in the sand on the CDI and coil issues though.
I agree, they're way more active on brake, master cylinder and stalling issues than electronics Triumph Recalls . Even so, it seems this fellow had a much better experience with Peter Carleo:

By now you'd think they'd go ahead and issue a service bulletin to cover the Americas and Speedmasters so the dealers could provide proper service. Wonder if there have been any Scrambler failures? If not, that would point to location rather than component failure.

I think they know exactly what is wrong with them. I believe they got out of the gate a little slow on it so thew up their hands and did what many companies would do. They stuck their heads in the sand on it.
There seems to be a larger number of CDI failure with the 270s according to my very scientific seat of the pants guess. I am wondering if more heat is generated in a different configuration.
I dunno, I just know they are a problem. The direction of the company is moving to sport and big bikes. We will be left behind shortly anyhow. That may be the business decision.
They no longer seem to need the geezer magnets.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Yep, you really have to search to find a 360° that's blown. That's what makes the Scram a perfect control element, their ignitors are located under the seat over the rear fender keeping them away from the high voltage output of the coils and the heat of the engine. Sigh, I guess we'll never know.
Here's what I do know. My ignitor failed. I was changing a rear tire and when I started the bike up after sitting for a few days it only ran on the right cylinder. After a day of shade tree diagnostics I ordered a replacement ignitor from Pinwall Cycles wrecking yard. Voila, instant fix. Too bad I reset the sensor gap while I was waiting on UPS; bad repair procedure not to track one element at a time.
Then, just to insure the ignitor was blown and it wasn't the sensor gap (there's a service bulletin on that) I put the old one back in and the bike fired right up, no problems. Now I didn't know which repair was the cure. Somewhat distrustful of instant miracle cures I put the Pinwall salvage unit back in and kept the original as a back-up.
Fast forward a few thousand miles: Triumph Twin Power is remapping ignitors. Gleefully I send my "spare" unit overseas for remapping and ask the tech to check the original maps for corruption of the data (because that's what I'm thinking happened from a high voltage spike). I get the unit back, remapped and the tech writes that the original data was fine.
In goes the hot-rod unit...and...wait for it...no fire on the left side. So it's not the map data, most likely a mechanical failure and that just has to be heat or high voltage damage to the output section.
Now I just wonder if a Pro-Com can be remapped to fire a 270° bike? I'd sure feel a lot more confident about longer trips with a spare.

one gentleman that I trust based on history and actions since 2004, says triumph employees are contract bound to not discuss the ignitor syndrome. I was led to believe during one discussion a ways back, that if a triumph employee in the know could divulge what was known, we the owners would have an eloquent solution to ignitor failures and replacements. got an issue myself and am going to -for troubleshooting reasons- be swapping out Vera Lynn's ignitor with Cinnamon Girl's AFTER the NH Rally.

They don't want to pay for one. As for Peter, well he won't admit to the prevalence of igniter failures as they would probably have to do a recall.
I'm starting to agree with Ron as to my next bike. Maybe one of these:

i guess i can join the club. my 04 america has been craping out. it seems like it just turnes itself off. but the lights stayh on. been doing that since i hit 25000 miles. dealer cant figure it out. checked the plugs. reset the coil wires, carbs for water etc etc . now he thinks i need a new box . not sure what that is but it costs about 500 bucks. my question is , has anyone had this problem fixed yet? i dont want to sell it to someone else if its unsafe. i will eat it first.

Got news from my dealer. He said to come pick up the bike in the morning. They were able to replicate the problem. The coil (left side) that wasn't replaced back in '08 was the culprit... it failed while the tech was riding it. So, they replaced it. Now here is the value add... they replaced the other one too! Dealer said he wasn't a mechanic but he didn't feel comfortable not replacing them in pairs. My cost to pick up the bike... $0.00!

I took delivery in December 2001, and my bike falls in the maintenance notification of the igniter issue. It has died several times during hard acceleration, but I flipped the kill switch off&on and it ran fine. I've waited for ProCom to offer an igniter for the 270 engines, hoping that would fix it. But as far as I know, they still only offer an igniter for the Bonneville with the 360 degree firing sequence. Since it is an intermittent problem, I've never consulted my dealer.

I picked the bike up this morning and rode it all day (I just walked in the door). Rode highway, backroads, fast, slow, etc... I did have one hick-up. Was winding it up full bore wide open throttle (first gear pulling great no issues), hit second still pulling strong. Then I hit the rev limiter (and kicked it into third). When it hit third (after hitting the rev limiter) it did the ole no additional rpm despite twisting the throttle wide open again. Down shifted into second still no rpm. Pulled over to the side of the road and shut it down. Hit the starter fired it right back up and rode off like a new one. I didn't wind it up to the limiter the rest of the day and it rode great (I didn't want to chance it again). I'll be reporting the one issue back to the dealer... I have no idea what caused it (ignitor still intermittently trying to fail?????). I'll be hitting the road again in the morning for a full day ride... we'll see what happens.
