All, I finally had the chance to talk with Peter Carleo at Triumph USA down in Atlanta. He was unaware of my issues and said he wouldn't be the right person to speak with anyway... it would be one of the resident techs. Needless to say I still took the opportunity to discuss my problems with him anyway (what the heck, I had him on the phone).
Before I relate the conversation let me say that I'm not throwing Peter under the bus. I'm just repeating the conversation and folks can draw their own conclusions.
I went over the problems with cutting out, backfiring etc. He pulled up my records and saw where they had replaced the coil under warranty (even though the bike was beyond the warranty period). That was the last record he had in the system... he didn't have any record of the pick up sensor on the crank being replaced. I said that was great but that the problems started when the bike was under warranty it just took the problem that long to manifest and finally die (and it didn't fix the problem anyway... neither did the pick up sensor or the battery) or for that matter anything else they had done.
I then identified myself as a member of this forum and explained that the general consensus was that the CDI was faulty and that they needed to replace it. Peter then proceeded to inform me that I shouldn't place any stock in what I read or find online. I said excuse me, I'm talking about OWNERS who have had similiar problems. He then stated that anyone who said that coils and CDI's had intermittent problems didn't know what the were talking about. According to their warranty records and engineers they either worked or they didn't. I repeated that I was relating information from OWNERS... more particularly owners from this site (whom I regard as the definitive EXPERTS on these bikes). He basically reitterated that owners didn't know what they were talking about. He then asked what my mileage was, I said 25k. His response was "well it seems pretty reliable to me". I said yeah, it runs great when it isn't dead.
It then became apparent to me that I wasn't getting anywhere with him so I thanked him for his time and hung up. I'm still waiting to hear from the dealer if he has had any luck at diagnosing and fixing the problem (again).
