Ok, after I've had a night (and plenty of liquid sedative) to reflect... here were the symptoms. Day before yesterday when I picked it up it ran fine. Yesterday morning when I started it up and headed out it seemed to be slightly missing (mild sputtering). It cleared up after it warmed up. Rode with a buddy for most of the day (running fine). Stopped for lunch and a brew, so it sat and cooled off for about a hour and a half. Fired it up after lunch, headed back towards home. About the exact spot where it left me on the side of the road last weekend it starts missing again (like it's running out of fuel... except it has 3/4 of a tank of gas). The it starts the backfiring crap again and starts loosing rpm (twist the throttle nothing, hit reserve nothing, unscrew gas cap nothing, reach under tank and make sure wires are in coils nothing, push wires down on plugs nothing, make sure caps are seated on carbs and intake manifolds nothing). Coast to a stop on the side of the road it's still running but nothing more than a idle. Twist the throttle and it won't rev up, I swear it seemed like it was only hitting on one cylinder anyway (the right side). After shutting it off and repeating all the previously mentioned steps again I start it back up and it seems to run fine again. Anyway, it does this all the rest of the way back home (thankfully I actually made it back home this time). I went out and started it up this morning and let it run for a while and it's still "sputtering".
Incidentally, is it normal for the control lines and vent hose to be hanging below the coils and sitting on top of the cam cover?
Me, the dealer and Atlanta are going to be having a very serious conversation this week. I'll keep yall posted.
