Welcome! Plenty of stuff to learn here, and not all about Triumphs either! So, where are you from?

I am in central washington state. I like the speedmaster but dont know if it has enough power. It felt good when I rode the america and the sales guy said the speedmaster has a little more power then that did. I just wanna know if it will pull 375 lbs up a 6% grade at 65 mph. Do you know?

It will do that all day with no problems. It will pull that weight at 75mph just as easily.

at my peak I was about 315/320# and this bike never had a problem moving me. I only have pipes and air box removal and the bike feels great.
Where in WA are you...?

So is there any downside to the 09 speedmaster? I thought about gettting the thunderbird but dont know if it is really worth it. Im thinking the speedmaster and trying to upgrade it a little to get some more power and I got to put some exhaust on it the america I rode sounded like a sewing machine.

Performance wise, there's virtually no difference between a Speedmaster and a America. I suspect the new TBird will stomp 'em though. For the money, i'd get a Speedy and do like roadworthy, dumping all sorts of money on shiny and go-fast stuff.

The only downside is little petty things like the shape of the gas tank or EFI vs. carbs, pre-fire or all after...

Heh, my Bonneville America, with it's measly 790cc, does that every time I ride it. Although it's hard to keep the speed that low.

OK Irvin, I'll be the one to pi*s in the Wheaties, I know there'll be others if they read this thread.
If you plan to do a lot of two up riding, especially for long distances get something other than a Speedmaster or America.
Don't get me wrong, these are very cool bikes and I have ridden mine for long distances and others have ridden much longer. Some two up.
That said, it's underpowered for two passenger touring. Mine is set up as a solo ride for that reason.
Get a bike with plenty of power and comfort. The T-Bird may fit the bill. A Rocket Three may do it.
A SM/BA won't. They are not hod rods (of course money and time can make anything fast).
They are sweet middleweight cruisers that handle better than anything else in their class. They are more powerful than any size wise comparable bike. They are a blast to ride and look nice too.
Now if you have in mind an occasional two up putt around town, or even a day trip once in a while........well, I'd still want something stronger, but a SM/BA might be adequate.

My '07 America pulls hills like a mountain goat and I chase sportbikes through the coastal mountains of Western Oregon two up with no problem.

the best part is that when I'm all done, I'll have my dream bike with everything I can imagine done to it, and will still have spent less than I would on a stock HD Soft tail.

Salesman is full of S*** the America and Speedmaster are virtually the same bike performance-wise. Different seat, handlebars, wheels, and the Speedy has twin rotors up front. If the America felt underpowered the Speedy will too. Keep in mind simple exhaust and intake mods will improve performance greatly from stock. For 2-up your passenger will like the America better, but you can swap seats with an America if you want. Personally, I'm 6'4" and I weigh about 360 and am completely happy with the performance of my 06 America (790cc) I've also ridden 2-up on a couple of trips with the OL and had no problems. However, bigbill is right, it wouldn't be my top choice if 2-up touring was what I had in mind. Well, maybe if I weighed about half of what I do it would be ok. Good luck with your decision, they are great bikes. Lots of great info on this forum too.

Heck I didn't even know what "go fast" stuff was until I stumbled across this site 6 years ago. Never exceeded 55-60 mph until I met some of the characters here.
Well, maybe once, but that was on a long downhill.
I know where Wenatchee is, there's a funky eatery in Waterville on the bluffs east of the Columbia
Welcome.

I will try to acquire proof... just for you! Although riding one handed while holding a camera at 120MPH could prove to be quite a challenge.

First season I had my 04 SM with the 790 engine Wendy and I did some 2 up touring and had no issues at all. Bike rode and pulled fine even with our stuff strapped to the back. Went from the Poconos Pa to Laconia NH the 2nd week I owned it and then toured all over Gettysburg a couple weeks later. Following year we got her a BA but not because of anything to do with my SM. Just because she wanted her own bike.

If I were in the market for a Speedy or America I would go for a used one. Any model year before 2007. Why? 2007 is when the America got screwed. No more wire spoke wheels, no more 790cc motors (7 HP drop right there),no more slash cuts pipes, no more straight fork shrouds, and something about Taiwan. In 2008 they totally screwed both the Speedys and Americas with those Harley wanna be, indent free tanks.
A used Triumph America or Triumph Speedmaster motorsickle is a great value. These bikes have a great history of not breaking down too.
On the two-up desire. Riding pillion is sorta like a new toy for the kids. After a week or so they could care less about riding, er the new toy. Buy somethin you want to ride. Again a used motosickle. Then if your better half really wants to ride all the time, get a brand spanking new Triumph Tiger or a Honda ST1200 sport-tourer.

I'm getting a 09 America next week. Why??? 2 Years warranty and 1 years breakdown cover (but only in the UK). I couldn't find a used one that matched up to my exacting requirements...... other than the one that was pinched and the 03..... I know the spokes and change of engine reasons... I rushed to get the 06, for those reasons. But I'm an America Rider. It's how it is. And I got a great price from my friendly dealer!!!
Gina
03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

I wouldnt be riding 2 up all the time, most likely it will just be me most of the time, and the mountian passes will be once in awhile like maybe a few times in the summmer. I looked arouond for some used ba/sm, but couldnt really find any. I like the warrenty idea too. I dont want something abused so I thought new. I llike the looks of the speedmaster and do wished it had the older style tank. The america I rode felt like it had enough power around town but just didnt know how it preforms on the highways and mountians. Most of my riding will be local no major hills but just wanted to make sure she would do it if I needed it to do it. Beside my wife says I dont need to follow after the Harley crowd I need to be differnt and get a bike the other people around here dont ride. There is alot of Harley heritage and kawi vulcans and what nots but I dont see any triumphs and after reading up on them they seem to be depenable bikes.

Well, the name is somewhat oxymoronic. Everyone with half a brain knows the America is faster, the black ones being the fastest of the breed. A black Speedmaster can almost keep up with a blue America. Other combinations, well fuggetaboutit.

Dealers blow. Especially when you have them touch your bike. The two year warranty is great. Never used it either, cept for flaking paint around the gas cap neck. That turned out to be a Monty Python episode too. grrr Even if you have a problem with a used motorsickle, changes are Triumph will fix it if circumstances warrant it.
Vera Lynn Bought new October 2001 - currently has 78,038.2 orgasmic miles. Cinnamon Girl bought used July 31st, 2007 with 15,415 miles now has 44,716.9 orgasmic miles on her. Let's see, in 21 months I put 29,301.9 miles on Cinnamon Girl. So much for warranties eh? Do you think triumph would offer a two year unlimited mileage warranty on motorsickles if they thought they would have lots of warranty claims? Something is righteous with John Bloor and his trumpets.
To each their own I guess. No worries. Someone has to buy the fugly current models.

Hey Irvin - I'm just north of you in Vernon BC and I have a mint set of Triumph Off-Road pipes from my '08 America that might suit you. Send me a PM if you're interested, or check the classifieds. Pedro
