Went to the ace cafe triumph bike meet on sunday for the 1st time place was packed . managed to park in car park. spend 1hr walking round having a drink. went back to bike and asked if could start it up to listen to tors. cant find the keys !! checked all pockets ,lid. gloves all around in. checked everything again. nope anit got em Go into cafe its mobbed out find a guy no keys 2 sets handed in early but claimed.Try steward on the gate they said. I find him YES. keys with a tag Geoff on given to him he handed them in to the triumph stand. I had left them in the bike someone thought that was a dumb thing to do So took them out and gave them to him. for a while i had visions of the AA picking me up in a pickup truck. tho Im sure someone there would have been able to hot wire it ( how easy would that have been ? ) Just glad to have got them back and that i took my blood pressure tabs that morning stupid geoff

I have a bad habit of leaving the key in the ign also. One of these days it's going to bite me in the you know where.

Me too.... but not the last time I used the 06!! That's why the alarm fob was always separate to the ignition key - and chained to my jacket!!

The key should be the last thing you touch before you get off the bike shouldn't it? Neutral, kickstand down, turn the bike off (with the key) the way it was intended. Glad you found them that would really suck.

I actually left mine in the switch, in the on position while i went in a restaurant in Murphy,NC for about an hour last weekend. Sure was glad a HID headlight doesn't drain a battery very quickly! Oh yeah, i'm glad nobody stole my bike too.

So far, the only time I left the key in the Triumph is when I've been working on it. It's really easy when you put the key in to get it out of the hand, check the chain check the oil, start it up and tune the carbs, shut it off, go get the multimeter, start it up and check the alternator, shut it off, check the tire pressure, etc, go wash up and forget the key. My brand X bike is a totally different story because it has the old style ignition switch. On those, you unlock the switch and drop the key in your pocket. Turn on the switch and go. Then, you turn off the switch, take off the gloves glasses etc. get the stuff out of the saddlebag and try to remember to dig out the key and lock the switch.

I left my key in my bike while at the San Diego Chargers game (Jets v. Chargers). Luckily they were still there when I got back to my bike after the game. I was kicking myself for being such an idiot . Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

On the contrary, I think it was the right thing to do - maybe the next person to notice the key in the ignition would have fired it up & ridden it away??

you can also say "what if" the guy gave his keys to another guy who then lost them, then what? If youre gonna be a "nice guy" and take someones keys, leave a note where to find them or something.

The guy that took the keys out of the ignition and turned them in is a jerk. He is a save the world kind of guy, and needs to keep his hands to himslef. Just taking the keys and handing them in caused you all kind of problems and you may have never recovered them. Around here, if someone touched a set of keys to save the world, he may find himelf with a broken hand. No No No...dont touch the bike...go hug a tree instead.

Are you guys freaking kidding me? Ain’t no tree hugger, nosy do-gooder horrible blemish on the face of the earth or nothing negative like that. Geez! We always bish and moan about the “me, me, me†society, that nobody gives a flying hoot about anything but themselves. Now, somebody sees that some dolt left his keys in his ignition and is nowhere in the area. He/She kindly removes the keys, without damaging the bike apparently, and turns them in to what might be considered a local authority so that one of these opportunist, “me, me, me†thieves does not go cruising away on your beautiful m/c. Now it’s this guys fault because you were not responsible enough to take care of your keys in the first place. GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK PEOPLE!!! I have been that dolt too and left my keys in the bike while in a store or restaurant or whatever. Once left on so my battery drained and had to personally jump start it to leave the restaurant I had stopped at while on the road. I would have been and would still be happy if someone had pulled them out and turned them in somewhere. Maybe might cause me a little inconvenience in getting them back and getting back underway but so freaking what. MY BIKE IS STILL THERE so that I can find my keys or hot-wire the bike or do whatever it is I need to do to get underway. Wow! Get the freak over yourself and appreciate the kind act this stranger did. I would do the same and am pretty sure this person did it with the intent of keeping the bike safe and not something malicious like hugging trees or anything. If in the act of doing this for someone, somebody else tries to break my hand... well, we'll see where that goes.
Ride On!

Ya I agree with you on this one. I always leave my keys in the bike. Never bother taking them out. I don't have spare either so I would have freaked out if I reached back and no key. So if you see an 05 Speedy Blue/black, the keys are in it, leave it that way.

Well, yeah Dill, I suppose a NOTE left wedged between the seat and the gastank explaining where the keys where taken might have been the smarter move by whoever the "Good Samaritan" was, huh?!
(....even IF it might've been written in "DWIGHTISH"!!!!)

(but just one question...wouldn't your phraseology above of "a malicious tree hugger" be somewhat of an oxymoron, dude?????)
Exactly, sorta, kinda the point there Dwight. However, I guess if I were to hug a tree with intent to harm, then it wouldn't be an oxymoron, now would it? But I think you get the gist of my meaning.

I dont personally think anyones wrong here, because theres too much that depends on the situation. One guys "best intentions" is another guys lost set of keys. I'm all for brotherhood and doing a solid but I think its safe to say that theres a better chance of ending up with lost keys than getting your bike stolen.

i used to leave my key in my bike alot untill a friend stopped me from doing that. he took the key out and waited untill i was going to hotwire my bike to get home and then he would give it to me. he did it a couple of times and i came to realize he was doing me a favor. i have never used the kill switch on this bike i always turn it off at the key and the key always gos in my pocket unless i am someplace like Ga. rally or friends house but i always use key to turn off bike. my sister used to slap my hand when i didnt use a turn signal in the car when we were young hahahahaha i cant hardly make a turn without signaling when i am in the car today. i guess some lessons are well taught and well learned.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Remove personal liability by alerting whomever is in charge of the event, property, local authority ect. Having keys held by a proprietary entity can prevent a theft. Leaving a note where to retrieve keys is fine. You don't give keys back to someone unless they can provide ID and Ownership cards. PA announcements are also sometimes made in situations like this to alert the owner who left them. (18 years Security experiance in saving my employer from Liability claims, and myself.)

Sure am glad I'm not the only one who forgets keys.I have jumped my bike a couple of times and have folks come in and say who has the Triumph with the lights on. Really know how to make a guy feel stupid.
I was so much older then, I am younger than that now (Wrote By Dylan Sung by the BYRDS,)

I agree with BrokenFixed, much better chance of a lost set of keys than a stolen bike. What would have happened if he didn't check if the keys were turned in. That wouldn't have come to mind with me. I would have assumed I lost it, and placed a call for a truck or hot wired it. If you catch someone messing with the key is he stealing it or helping you. Who know, who cares, he shouldn't mess with items that don't belong to him. He is putting himself at risk for a good butt chewing is he gets caught. Worse yet is the guy that takes the key to try and teach you a lesson, after you spend time trying to hot wire it. Once again, don't touch things that don't belog to you. Life is simple with this approach. If you can't see it this way, you need a few more scares.
