Ok, you all know I'm new to this stuff, so please pardon the ineptitude

The previous owner of my Speedy put aftermarket pipes on (don't know what kind) and a FREAK airbox removal. All cool, but I get the occasional backfiring. Is this normal? It's not that often... Just once in a while when I let off the gas completely and suddenly. Also, I get one once in a while when I start it. Seems to only happen on one side (right).

Any suggestions for the clueless?

Are you talking about a bunch of little rapid pops on deceleration? That may just indicate a lean pilot circuit, and only require backing out on the pilot screws a little bit.
If it's a big bang when starting it up, make sure you don't twist the throttle while starting it.

Only in the morning if I full choke my bike it will give a really good pop-and seems to come out of the right side only too. If I half choke it no pop. Mine doesn't do it with decel. Is it possible we both have lean pilot screws on the right??

I do get the little pops on decel. I also get a LOUD pop sometimes. Not usually on cold starting... that happened once, but I get it when letting off the gas and pulling in the clutch after a sustained period of speed (say, downshifting for an offramp on the highway).

Mine did exactly the same, mostly on the right side as well.
I turned out the mixture screw a little at a time till I got rid of the big pops. I now have the ocasional pop but its more of a rumble on decel.
Sometimes I now get stereo pops(thats cool ).

Turn your mixture screw out a 1/8th of a turn out on the right side, that will probably improve it,just keep an eye on your plugs to make sure you dont get too rich.

I vote for... Check the header to head connection. Sounds like you have a leak that's sucking in fresh air and reigniting unburned fuel in the headers.
