Thinking about the different grades of fuel... If the last person to use the pump got 87 octane and you pull up and pump 91 octane; how much 87 octane is left in the system before the 91 octane is dispensed? I think I'm getting ripped off trying to run premium.

Probably not enough to worry about. The way I see it, premium fuel is about 60-80 cents more per tank than the cheap stuff, what's the big deal? You could always look for a pump that dispensed premium on its last use, but really, what's the point?

Interesting question. 10 feet of hose, 1" diameter, equals 94.25"^3.
94.25/231 = .40 gallons before you hit premium.
2.5 per gallon versus 2.2 per gallon = .30cents difference .30dollars x .40 gallons. equals a .12 dollars or a 12cents ripoff per fill up.
Assuming I did my math right(second rum and coke)

PS I made several assumptions, but you get the idea.

We've had a lot of fuel threads on here and i think you'll find that many will say your wasting your money on highest grade gas b/c it burns slower and you're not burning fuel at it's optimum level. You should use whatever grade is the lowest but does not cause any pinging, etc... Others will say the highest grade produces more horses and burns like crazy, would never use anything else. In my honest opinion...I use midgrade(89 to 91). If it doesn't cause problems, the bike runs great, and saves me money, I don't see a problem with THAT. Why spend more?

My understanding is, the line that extends from the pump to the nozzle feeds from overhead to prevent fuel from sitting in the lines. Thus a fresh squeeze pumps fuel up a long shaft and then down the flexible tube to the dispense nozzle. Once the pump stops the gasoline runs in two directions, one from the dispense to the nozzle, and the other from the long feed tube back to the underground storage tanks. The issue is not people pumping the wrong grade gasoline for as few seconds, but the gasoline sitting in those pipes vaporizing and leaving a volatile situation should a fluke spark ignite it.

Using the lowest grade that works without detonation,is best as far as efficiency goes. HP is included in this.

Excellent math throw down, & waaaay over my cipherin' head, but...
Gas hose is coaxial for vapor recovery. I'd have to go check, but the ID of product portion of the hose is probably closer to, 3/4" ? Sorry - couldn't help myself
More gasoline fun facts - most underground storage tanks have a wee bit of water in them. It's managed and isn't a problem 99.9% of the time. When the gas delivery tankers dump their loads, I wonder if they don't stir the tanks a bit. I have a superstition about buying gas when I see a delivery in progress. I could well be wrong.

No, you are correct. best to let the fuel sit a bit and it'll stratify. As for octane, there is no benefit to using higher than a engine needs-and most likely performance will suffer if it's higher than the design spec. There are about 1mm papers on this topic and a bit of internet fun at the big oil sites will "learn you" a bunch of fun and useless facts.

87 or 91 Octane is always preferred to gas from the Green Handled pump.
I red about that on the internet.

That's what my owner's manual says, so that's all I ever buy. From "quality" gas stations, of course. (Shell, Chevron, maybe Exxon or Valero in a pinch)
It amazes me how people driving Mercedes, Lexus, Jaguar, etc., can have no concern over stopping and filling up at no-name "Stop-N-Robs"....two pumps in front of the neighborhood cigarrette store....to me, that's not a fuel stop.

Considering that most if not all of our gasoline comes from one of three or four refineries, why should it matter which station you buy the fuel from? It is all the same product sold under a different brand.
