So, I got a new set of grips for the Speedy. I didn't think I'd have any problem swapping them out, but dayum... First of all, the left side bar-end came right off... nice and easy. The right side, on the other hand is being a ROYAL PITA! The M3 screw is just stuck... I stopped trying when it started to strip. Is there a trick, or is it just a tight fit?
Second, is there a good way to get the grips themselves off.. I haven't done it before, and I don't want to waste half the night and half the skin off my hands trying to remove them... Yeah, I know... "If only all problems were that easy".
Anyway, thanks. Lance

The grips are pretty easy to replace. Just cut the old ones off. I used a single edge razor blade. Just be careful on the throttle side so you don't damage the throttle sleeve. Then use hairspray to install new grips. It acts as a lubricant to slide the grips on. Once the grips are in place the hairspray acts like glue. The screw on the end cap should come out fairly easily with the right allen wrench. Hope this helps.

Ok... Yeah, I was hesitant to cut the old ones off, but after a minute or two of wrestling, out came the razor blade. The right side screw was REALLY in there... So, I used the M3 until the bolt stripped. Then I hammered a T20 bit into the stripped bolt and that worked for a few turns before it stripped again. That got the head out enough that I could get a vise-grip around it and got it out.
Hadn't thought about the hair spray. I'll have to try that for the glue effect.
Ok then, new grips, LED 'idiot light' conversion, horn upgrade... Moderately productive night all in all...

Put the bit in the screw for the bar end and give it a couple sharp smacks with a hammer, that will normally losesn up a stubborn screw.

Easiest way with no damage to the grips should you ever want to use them again. Remove the bar end weights, work a thin bladed flat screwdriver between the inner edge of the grip and the bar, spray WD 40 through the plastic straw that comes attached to the can into the gap alongside the screwdriver blade. Work the blade around the inner side of the grip and the WD 40 will disolve the grip glue and enable you to slide it off the bar in one undamaged piece.

It's very timely. I have a set of speedmaster bars for my TBA that came with the left grip still attached. I'll probably use that grip until I decide what to use for custom grips. And when I do I'd still rather not destroy the grip getting it off the bar.

i read on here a while ago that someone used an air compressor and a needle nozzle for filling up basketballs. It just blows a cushion of air under the grip and you float it right off. (or so the legend goes..)

Yeah Tom, I've heard about this method too, and thought maybe somebody might have put a demonstration of it on YouTube, but evidently not. However, I did find a guy on YouTube who used a different method to get his grips off.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf-EKwyER74(BTW...wait 'til you hear what that guy says at the very end...it was pretty funny)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
