Ok Can I get a pic on were the air mixer screw is I think I found it but want to make sure and i'm not finding any thing that tells me. Also my bike is a 08 am I going to need a D tool to change it.

look at your carbs from the side, there are two wires in front of the bowl. right behind those is a tube that goes up into the carb, that's where it's located

It has a cover over the hole I have to remove right. Is it the deap hole ant the bottom of the carb or the shallower one towards the top.

The later, uncovered screws have the D head.
Edit: Just noticed your sig. The hole on the '08 is not covered. It has the D head screws. Look up in there with a little mirror and flashlight.

Ok the pilot adjustment is on the bottom near the red arrow, and the air/idle mixture adjustment is under cap at the blue arrow I think. Which one am I going to turn out to lessen the amount of back firing I am getting.

As far as I know there is no adjustment screw under the plug at the blue arrow. The red arrow is the mixture screw and is the one you want to adjust.

The D screw under the carb behind the wires is sometimes refered to as the idle air mixture adjustment. Don't go drilling any holes anywhere.

thanks yes I I got it now thanks for the help I was slightly lost. Now I got to get a D screw adjuster then pull the carbs again. I guess its going to back fire for a week or too intill I can get the time.

I use a 1/4" alloy tube with a flattened side, fits great, if your careful you can do the job with carbs on the bike.

There is a guy at the local bike night that has a 2004 Bonneville with the AI removed and a lot of other stuff done to it. I am hoping he has the tool and he might even be able to turn them out a little right there.

If you ask nicely Im sure theres someone on here that will let you borrow a D tool. I would get a set of thumb screws though. Itll make future adjustments easier. BTW...I have a D tool you can borrow. PM me.

Man, those thumbscrews are expensive. I've never had the original screws out all the way - are they brass? I'm thinking it might be possible to solder an extension tube over the end. Anyone tried?

YES and No.
Yes they are expensive if you dont plan on messing with em.
No they are not expensive if your going to be making mods and are going to need to adjust a couple times.
Yes they are expensive if you pay a shop to do all the work for you.
No they are not expensive if you travel a lot and might go up (or down) in elevation where you may need to richen or lean the bike. (I know this is an extreme situation but it could happen).
and lastly...
No they are not expensive if you have to drill that plug out and accidentally damage one of your old screws:
