I'm resposting this as no one seems to have seen the original message.

I coming up on my 12,000 mile check and it looks as if I need another front tire. I replaced the stock Metzler Lasertec at the 6,000 mile service. So I'm only getting 6,000 miles on the front.

The orignal rear Metzler ME880 is better, but it probably won't be long before it needs replacing too.

Almost all my riding is on the twisties...I live only 15 minutes from the Dragon.

Is anyone else experiencing this low mileage with the Metzlers?

Sorry, seemed kinda like a rhetorical question. Riding the twisties all the time will wear your tires quickly.

Mine lasted about 7000 miles before replacement, it was cracked on the sidewalls. My original Bridgestone lasted 8000 before it was bare. I have an IRC on it now, it still looks really good after 4000 miles.

Yeah, I know, but was curious how others were doing. Apparently, 6,000 miles is about all you can expect with this kind of daily riding.

I got about 13,000 out of my rear Metz and front is still going at 21,000. Although it is at the wear bar now.

My '08 Lasertech lasted about 9K in a mix of city/hwy daily commuting.

I got 11000-12000 miles out of my front and about 16000 out of the rear. I would add that the rear tire was totally used up at the point, no cords showing but within a mile of it.
But I do not live near the dragon either.

I got about 17000 miles out of each set of Metzlers (2 sets so far) that I put on the bike. There was a mix of slab/twisties riding on each set.

What mileage did any of you that have Mezlers now get out of your stock Bridgestones (if you have an America)?

Thanks for posting this one Lee cos I'm due to replace both my tyres and like you I would like more wear out of my front one at least cos doing commuting and country type riding 7k isn't a that good.

Mind you, I've heard about duel compound tyres which have a harder compound in the centre where most of the wear happens and softer compound on the sides. Does anyone know of a good tyre like them perhaps which may give us longer wear???

16,000 kilometers on my stock Bridgestones. The front was replaced due to sidewall cracking but still had plenty of life in it. The rear was half worn but with 2 plugs in it, I replaced it.

Got rid of my tubes also and installed 880s (tubeless) on my new chrome cast wheels. Look good, but I miss the spokes.

16,000 kilometers = 10,000 miles. I have over 16,000 miles on mine and have decent tread left. I was curious reading about many people not getting great mileage on their Metzlers. I figured if I got way more on the stock tires, I'd probably also get way more on the Metzlers.

In 66,000 miles I have used only Metzelers, and all but the first front have been 880s. In 6 years on this forum I haven't heard of a better tire for longevity without too big of a compromise in handling. Typically I get 17,000 out of a front, and 12,000 out of a rear.

If I was running the curves though like you do all the time, I'd sacrifice longevity for a stickier tire. Avon Venoms are very popular around here for that.

To save money, try ordering online if you mount them yourself, or if a local shop doesn't mind if you bring in your new tires and rims. American Motorcycle Tire are out of Scottsdale, Az and there prices are decent for the Metzeler 880s.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Think I will stick with the ME 880 for the rear and may swap the front for an ME 880 also as people seem to be getting better mileage with it than the Lasertec.

I don't do much riding on the Dragon as there are too many crazies, but mostly on the backroads of east TN and the Cherohala.

So I need some good grip, but would like to get better than 6,000 miles per tire.

24,000 2 rears and 2 fronts. The 880 on fronts seems to be doing alot better. Will have to get 3rd rear soon not much left on it.

6000 miles just doesn't sound right. Riding in the mountains should increase wear on the sides but you should be getting better than 6000. The sides of my tires look like new and I'm almost at the indicator in the center (16,000 miles), but I live in Florida. What tire pressures do you run?

P.S. North Carolina sure is a beautiful place to ride. Took my bike up there for a week last year (Linville). We rode from Ashville to Virginia on the Blue Ridge and did the "Snake" between NC and TN on 421. My next trip up there will definitely include the Cherohala Skyway. I really like the mountain scenic roads better than turns for the sake of turns although I'll probably ride the "Dragon" when over that way.

I'm running 31 psi front, 33 psi rear. I'm a wide body carrying about 250 pounds so that might have some effect on mileage.

Yes, western NC is beautiful...probably more so than east TN. The Parkway around Linville Viaduct is a great ride. I much prefer the Cherohala rather than the Dragon...better scenery and not as many kids on their crotch rockets. The Dragon is a must ride though to fill the square and get the t-shirt.

Used to live in Ft Walton and now spend the winters in Pensacola Beach, but the roads there aren't so good for riding so I leave the bike in TN.

After a quick ride to the Cherohala today, my front Metzler Lasertec is shot after 6,000 miles.

I've heard y'all say the ME 880 is good for the front as well as the rear.

Any more thoughts on the ME 880 versus the Lasertec before I go order some?

Thanks,

Lee

Are you sure you want to go Metzler? The more people I talk with, the more I find who think Metzler is inferior in many types of non-sport use. In particular, the cornering issues I've expereinced and the difficult control on wet roads have been noted by several others. I should add that I didn't prompt for those opinions, just asked what they thought. One was a service guy at a Triumph dealer I called to check the prices on replacement tires. The front Dunlop I just installed is so incredibly superior to the Metzler, I can hardly believe it's the same front end. I can't wait to get the new one on the rear as well.

Didn't last as long as my Metz did but I really like my IRC Wild Flare. It was cheap too.

I'm not sure what size front tire your running, but I don't think Matzler makes that ME880 Front in a 110/80/18. You may already be running the 180/90/18 like a lot of newer Americas are, or those that have changed to Avons or the like.

I'm not sure what kind of difference in handling it makes, but surely one could adapt to it quickly.

That 110/90 sure fills up that fuller front America fender - looks good in there.

The 880 is available in 110/90/18 and fits just fine. I just bought new front and rear and went with the 880 on both. I had seen the 880s on the front of Derek's (SalMaglie) Speedmaster and liked the look, so when my second Lasertec wore out, I got the 880. It seems to run smoother and I can't feel the rain grooves anymore. It wasn't bad with the Lasertec but these are better. The slightly larger diameter brings the speedo a tad closer to correct, only about 5% high now. Handling is just dandy too.

Yes, my '07 America came with 110/90 by 18 Lasertec.
