I am at 21,000 now and took a good look at my chain and sprockets when I just put a rear tire on my bike. The chain has only been lubed about 4 times and isn't showing any visible wear.
Just out of curiosity here...when you say " visible wear" I assume your talking about the teeth on the gears and overall look of the chain. Have you checked for chain stretch?
I ask cause there have been many many discussion about chain lubing. After thinking about this for a while I am truly wondering if what we should all be looking at is stretch before wear?
Follow me here...Dog for instance....has over 20k on his chain. Lubed every so often whenever he feels like. The sprockets may look good and show little to no wear and he feels confident about it. BUT if that chain is stretched that means that the metal properties have changed and the strength of that chain is now compromised. The issue may not be in the rollers. It may be in the links themselves.
Just thought Id throw in another aspect to this we may all be missing here.
P.S. Dog...I know your going to come back with youve never had a chain break. Great point and as you can tell that point has been taken BUT my luck usually sucks so Im going to check my chain stretch later this week.
