FYI: Looks like Scootworks has their belt drive kit ready for market.
http://www.shopscootworks.com/shop/produ...;catalogId=-799
If it's anywhere close to the kit I installed on my old Shadow ACE it'll be a high quality set up and a breeze to install.

But does it fit the BA/SMs? It says it is for the Bonnies and the video is of a T100.

Fair point, I didn't drill that deep. However, having had both bikes under the same roof I've interchanged parts freely so it would seem that belt length might be the only question here.

Great, so "LONG LONG LONG belt life." So what about the sprockets. How long do they last?

I'm guessing probably just as long long long. It would only make sense.

Friar,
You have a belt drive on yours already don't you? I would like to try a belt drive but I guess I am still not sold on them just yet. I know Hardly uses them but they look to be heavier duty than the kits for our bikes. I don't know???? It would be quieter and less maintenance but then if it breaks your screwed.

I had a belt break (probably my fault for improper adjustment) and could've been stranded but it happened blocks from a Triumph dealership. They picked up my bike, lent me the tools I needed and a jack, and gave me a loaner bike to go to the Harley dealership for a new belt. That was pretty lucky, eh? The next day I would've been in the middle of Idaho and SCREWED.

But much worse than that I've had the rear sprocket wear out at around 25-30,000 miles. I always thought the belt was the weak link. My replacement Harley belt looks great with tens of thousands of miles on it. And as you might expect, the rear sprocket is the majority of the cost of the kit so replacement is expensive.

I made the hard decision to go back to chain after putting all that money into the belt drive kit and the second belt. The fact that Zmilin can keep his bike clean with a chain and Scottoiler helped me decided to go that direction.

Bookmarked just in case. Not to side track any farther but have you managed to save much info from here or would we have to build it back up again? I write down the info I think I may use so I have some of it.

Take a deep breath. It will be (would be?) okay. Remember the important thing is the community, not the software and hardware. I (and others) have saved off the Tech Vault so we won't lose that. If there's other information in the tech forums that you think you need, save that too. But the people are the knowledge base and the core of this forum.

No, it doesn't fit the America or Speedmaster. I'm working with them right now on a proto type for the America/Speedmaster. I will keep you guys posted as it progresses.

I am surprised that they would build a setup for the Bonneville before the America. I would think that the call for the America would be greater since it is in the cruiser category where the Bonneville is in the retro category. I don't know just my opinion.

+1 on that opinion. All acessories should be built first for the BA... especially the black ones.

Hmm, an oiler on an "O" oe "X" ring chain seems unnecessary from my perspective. To each their own.

Your right...to each their own...BUT when the manufacturer of some of the better "O" ring chains suggest lubing as part of proper maintenence then I guess Ill follow their suggetsions.

Quote:

Q How should I maintain my O-ring chain?

A. Doing routine maintenance on any chain is a crucial step to getting the maximum wearlife out of your chain. You should clean and check its adjustment every 400 miles (sooner if the chain gets excessively dirty). Use formulated O-ring chain cleaner or other similar product to keep dirt from building up around link plates and rollers. Don’t use a wire brush or pressure washer. If your chain comes in contact with water, be sure to use a moisture displacement (like WD40). Lubing an O-Ring chain is vital for maximum wearlife. All RK O-Ring chains are injected at the factory with a lifetime supply of internal lubricant. The purpose of an O-Ring lube is to keep the chain from rusting and the O-rings from drying out. Use a lubricant specifically designed for O-Ring Chains.

I am at 21,000 now and took a good look at my chain and sprockets when I just put a rear tire on my bike. The chain has only been lubed about 4 times and isn't showing any visible wear.

I use spray lube on mine about every 2nd or 3rd fill-up, after a ride. It's really just not that big of a deal.

Just out of curiosity here...when you say " visible wear" I assume your talking about the teeth on the gears and overall look of the chain.
Have you checked for chain stretch?

I ask cause there have been many many discussion about chain lubing. After thinking about this for a while I am truly wondering if what we should all be looking at is stretch before wear?

Follow me here...Dog for instance....has over 20k on his chain. Lubed every so often whenever he feels like. The sprockets may look good and show little to no wear and he feels confident about it.
BUT if that chain is stretched that means that the metal properties have changed and the strength of that chain is now compromised. The issue may not be in the rollers. It may be in the links themselves.

Just thought Id throw in another aspect to this we may all be missing here.

P.S. Dog...I know your going to come back with youve never had a chain break. Great point and as you can tell that point has been taken BUT my luck usually sucks so Im going to check my chain stretch later this week.

I agree, belt vs chain is a no-brainer. When I get the urge to terrorize some hick burg with a Number 6, the effect is far greater if I go riding into town, a-whompin' and a a-whumpin' every living thing within an inch of its life, with a stout chain rather than a wimpy belt.

Of course the belt may come in handy later at the Number 6 dance...

It's Slim Pickens from the 'Blazing Saddles' code-book...

Not in my lexicon, although Slim Pickens in 'Dr. Strangelove' is well ingrained.

I've had a chain break on my 1980 750 ltd kaw
Locked up the rear wheel instanly, lost control of the bike and got slamed on the pavement. Not fun.
If only for the piece of mind and 21k I have on my 05 speedy I'm putting on fresh chain and sprocket this spring.

I notice the Triumph kit is 17/42. Does Triumph make a 18/42 kit yet? They have been using that configuration for a few years now, but I haven't seen an 18/42 kit available.
