tut, tut, tut. You brought your wife a Harley. What, don't you like her. What did she do to deserve that. Shame on you.

Yep - A buddy of mine tried to put an aftermarket tach on his two year old Sportster. Turned out that the wiring harness is actually a serial data bus. Harley has gone nuts.

I liked it better when there was a magneto in one corner of the triangular side casting and a dynamo in the other corner. Nowadays, I wouldn't even mind having to continually replace the selenium rectifiers and having the lights slowly dim 'till the battery dropped off to around 4 volts. Back then, there was very little short of a rod through the crankcase that you couldn't (and hadn't) fixed on the side of the road.

Now you can go to RadioShack and get a 4 or 5 dollar silicon rectifier, they are supposed to last much longer since they don't break down. I put one on my Honda Scrambler and it works fine.

+1 keep the pick ups clean and the mag pints adjusted and that thing will run.

Much like the cars of yesteryear, you could pull a car out of a junkyard and throw a set of plugs and points in a vehicle shy of a rod hanging out the side of the motor and get it running. Ahh the good ole days! Now you would need computers and lord knows how many sensors and relays and electrical crap that may need to replace before it will run. Oh and for the bikes Don't forget to throw in a KickStarter!! I for one miss having a kickstarter!

We need a country song, something like, "the old timers lament". Include me also. Both my "old" trumpet and my new trumpet feed my paranoia in different ways. When on a long trip with the old trumpet, I think, " something might break on this ole girl, but I put it together from pieces and can problably fix it on the road". With the new bike, it goes like this..." this new fangled thing is pretty much bullet proof, but if it breaks down, at least I have a cell phone with me"!
