My sister recently got accepted to nursing school, so as a congrats, I built her this bench. She and my dad are going to have to finish it (painted base, stained/poly top) because I ran out of time before my visit last weekend, but it came out really well I think! Only a couple blemishes... Whacha think? I have a bunch of in process pics too.

Looks like poplar framing and birch plywood. What are the legs and top? What kind of joints?

That is exactly what I was going to say! Looks to be oak on the top.

From one wood worker to another I gotta say that looks awesome. Nice work! Strong enough to do a rebuild on too by the looks of things.

Thanks everyone!!

Truth be told there are 4 kinds of wood there... Yes the top is oak. Since I knew it would be painted, I intended to use poplar, but also used what I had laying around. The frame is poplar, the legs I ripped out of a poplar 2x4 I found at home depot of all places. The end panels are leftover hardwood ply I had from when I built new shelves for my mom's kitchen cabinets that were sagging. The bottom pannel and dividers are just sanded pine ply, that I then sanded down some more. I did sift thru the stack for a nice piece... If I had it to do again, and had a truck... I'd get a full sheet of poplar or birch ply, and use all one species. Plus the top.

The joints are loose tennons. I used the "beadlock" to make them. And I had gotten the router bit to make the tennon stock, which I made out of poplar too. It sets up like a doweling jig, then you slide it over (loosen a knob and move it, not unclamp it...) and drill out the middle of the holes.

Setup...

And the mortises. 32 all together.

Then I put in corner blocks to not only mount the top, but give the corner joints some extra pull!

The cubby dividers are dado'd into the bottom, and pocket hole screwed to the top rails...

The side panels are 3/4 ply, rather than just a 1/4 panel like the plan called for. I did it for extra racking strength, and it made the insides flush to the legs. I pocket hole screwed them to the legs (with lots of glue) and trimmed the plugs flush with a block plane. Have a pic of that somewhere... no biggie. And the bottom pannel has some oak cleats it sits on, is glued and screwed to also. I don't think it's coming apart...

normally I charge $25 an hour, but for you, $25 an hour

Seriously tho, I'll build ya something if you need it! You'll have to come get it tho. I didn't have room for my wife in the Focus when I brought the bench to VT!!

Put that on top of a couple of cinderblocks and I could use it for a reloading bench. Look at all the storage for lead alloy below!

Benny, I got two words for you: biscuit jointer. The DeWalt is amazingly good at these applications and you never have to re-jet it.
Slight hijack - That jointer helped make this laptop/music production desk an easy project:

I used my Porter Cable biscuit joiner for the top on the bench! Worked great. I considered doing a mitered corner thing like that, but I was worried about expansion of the inner field breaking the joints... If I do another one, I'll consider doing a plywood seat with mitered hard wood border like that. Especially if the user plans on using a cussion on it. Also, if I were to do a true face frame cabinet, vs a bench with legs, I would probably pocket screw the face frame together, followed by biscuits to locate it on the carcase.

I cheated, the top is 3/4" Maple faced ply sliced along the grain lines out of some leftover from another project and biscuit joined to look like three planks; the Poplar border is the only real hardwood in the top.

Dude that's a good idea!! Rip it, flip it, and stick it I like it!! I'm totally doing that on the next one... With a contrasting wood for the border too.

Do I see peg holes in those miters? Or are those screw hole plugs from screwing it down to the legs?

By the way, first time I looked I wasn't seeing the second pic, it looks really nice all setup! What kind of finish did you use?

The pegs go thru to slots in the legs so the top can move around as the summer humidity builds. Just basic tung oil for the finish, maybe three or four coats with a nice #0000 buffing in between; my favorite finish by far...durable, repairable and easy.
