I read most of the above test. First off, it was performed in 1994. A lot of change in oil technology has taken place in 15 years. It appears that the tests were performed to compare motorcycle and automotive oils to see if the extra $$'s for cycle oil was justified. In comparing petroleum motorcycle to automobile oils, there was virtually no difference in viscosity retention. The extra people paid for the motorcyle oil was a rip off. In comparing synthetic to petroleum, it showed the synthetic was better. In fact, Mobile 1 automobile oil appeared to be the best. Note, there was no mention of JASO ratings yet because it didn't appear on the seen until around 1999. (The JASO rating approved an oil for use in a wet clutch) The new synthetic motorcycle oils meet the JASO requirement. Mobil 1 automotive 15W-50 doesn't neither does any other automotive oil, but by all means, use it if it's cheaper...no skin off my butt. There is no right or wrong here. You can put chicken snot in your engine if it makes you happy. Me ... I like Mobil 1 V Twin or Amsoil 20W50 Cycle oil.

I think everyone reading this thread should check out this link:
Testing Motorcycle Oil
It looks like the testing was done before oil prices shot up over a year ago. Very interesting read.
From the beginning of the article "This article is from the February, 1994 Motorcycle Consumer News in the article "Motorcycle Oils vs. Automotive Oils"."
Motorcycle Consumer News has since revised their position and now recommend motorcycle specific oils.
Now, if you have a bike with separate engine, transmission, and primary oils, go ahead and use whatever. But when these components all share the same oil you need one formulated for that purpose.
edit: Whoops. I posted before I got to your post Greg. Great minds and all that .
But Greg's right Bob. It's your bike. I'm more than happy for you to experiment.

Ian, did you read the above test?
I'm not surprised the different oils held up well in this test. But, the tester doesn't mention the effect on the clutch (and to a lesser extent, transmission) using oil not designed for use in that type of operating system. Will your clutch and/or tranny last as long? Only time will tell. Me, I'll pay a few bucks extra each year for motorcycle specific Mobil 1 oil from Autozone.
FWIW, when I first bought my bike a friend worked for Mobil 1 in Europe. She reported back that the Triumph Mobil 1 oil was no different than the other motorcycle Mobil 1 products, just custom branded. I did get some cool free things for participating in a consumer test for Mobil 1, but she since left the company and moved back to the states.
Has anyone here had their oil tested by Blackstone, etc? I can't say I've seen a bike oil report. I switched to Penzoil Platinum synthetic in my Altima, ran it to 10k and did an analysis. The results were great - they recommended 15k intervals.

Just so you guys understand. I'm using only what my dealer uses which happens to be motorcycle specific oil - just don't remember which one. I bought some 15W-50 Mobile 1 which my dealer said would be ok to top off until I get it in this week for service and oil change. I don't expect to be adding any oil when fixed.

1 word "astroglide". You can find it in the edible underwear section.
