I just bought the oil changes for our bikes and HOLY %@^*&*& %$##@ has the price gone up. The oil I was paying a little over $6 a qt for was over $10 a qt even with my commercial discount! That's Amsoil Motorcycle 20-50.

Even after being forewarned of the controversial nature of oil related threads in enthusiast forums...
I still recommend using it in your bike.

Allllllright, another oil thread!!!  I was gonna switch to Crisco (light), but they've jacked the price of that up TOO!

And speaking of our favorite lubricant, I've just switched to 10-40 Mobil Syn, only because I couldn't get the 20-50 here locally. Gonna try it for a while, but I'll be watching it closely for oil consumption. One of the members said on here that 10-40 was the original oil reccommended for the 02s.

You can pick up Mobil 1 15/50 fully synthetic at any O'Reilly Auto Parts store for $7.50 a quart.

Sigh, I've tried that, also. Not ant MY O'Reillys. I'm starting to think I'm in a Twightlight Zone. Or maybe, you're not talking the Mobil 1, 4T Racing Syn. Maybe there is more than one Mobil 1 syn out there. I suppose somebody out there will tell me there isn't any difference.

Same price for 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 0W 30 (for the 4 wheel fleet) at Mechanicsburg, PA Wednesday.
They had no motorsicle oils, darn it.

Ian,
Being a Amsoil dealer it cost me about $10.00 a quart with shipping and tax. The big advantage (IMHO) is that you can run the Amsoil twice as long as Mobil or any of the other oils out there.

I get the Amsoil 20w50 by the gallon on the preferred customer program so it cost less.Before shipping I believe it was around $35.I usually order a few different items such as oil for wifes car,chain lube and penetrating oil,etc.This makes the shipping cost not quite so bad as paying for shipping for one jug of oil.Yes they also say you can go further without changing it.I still change it at 6,000 to 7,000 miles in the Arizona heat.With the cost going up I may go the 10,000.I have heard from several other people there is no problem in doing it,also from riders of different brands of bikes.---Also remember that is one less gallon of oil you are buying from another country.I am a equipment mechanic by trade,so it has been hard converting this old dog to the longer lasting synthetic oils.

34,000 miles. all I've ever used is 10w40 full syn.
Except for one foray into 20w50 that dropped my gas mileage by about 4 mpg.
No consumption.

That's car oil. The MC specific is a bit more.
Car oil has friction reducers that may not be compatible with wet clutches.

There are a number of different Mobile 1 fully synthetic oils. My dealer (40 miles away) suggested Mobil 1 15/50 (as one of a few brands) to top off my bike. They use only 15/50 synthetic in their shop on the bike. I only could find one Mobile 1 in that viscosity. It is labeled: Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50. It was the only 15W-50 I found at AutoZone or O'Reilly (who had it for $7.50). I was in a hurry and didn't try other bike shops or Wal-Mart.
I'm getting my oil changed next week (4 year service) and my breather/seal replaced. I'll bring back a quart of what they use. Hopefully, with my oil use problem fixed, I won't have to add anything significant between yearly changes.
My first quart I got from them when I bought the bike lasted over 3 years and I would still have some if my crankcase breather hadn't have screwed up.

Looks like you and your dealer are using car oil.
I can't find that viscosity in MC specific Mobil 1.

That's a good link Bill and I think quite a few here would benefit from reading it. Especially the section on 4T and V Twin Mobil oils.

Auto Zone sells 2-50 Mobile One for less than 10 per quart.
That Amsoil must be good stuff, but how much better? What are the advantages? I just spoke to a guy who retired from Honda of America, owns 14 bikes and swears by Amsoil. Does it start yor bike and whistle Dixie at the same time? Is the clutch operation smoother? Better mileage? Longer engine life? What is is?
2008 BA, Ageon Blue, roadster shield, light bar. tach, big bags, square engine guard, short sissy with rack. All Triumph parts. No mods.

Just better oil all around, pick an aspect and it's better. I would imagine it then results in longer engine life as well as clutch and trans life since it is designed for that. The Mobil Racing 4T is comparable , I would run either one. I guess it all depends on what your bike is worth to you. If it isn't worth the extra money to run the best oil you can get then buy cheaper oil if it is worth it then buy the good stuff, it's your bike. My post was just my surprise at how much oil has gone up since last spring.

My dealer doesn't use any Mobil 1 oil. They do use 15W/50 - not sure which brand, but you can bet it's the correct oil. When I asked what I could buy to top it off (I'm 40 miles away), he said I needed to add 15W-50 and Mobil 1 fully synthetic would be ok. The only 15W-50 I could find in a hurry was Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I noticed the 15W/50 wasn't listed in the above link under the Extended Performance but they definitely make it and O'Rielly stores sell it. Maybe they also make a MC oil 15W-50.
I'm leaving my bike for 4 year service this week and do plan to get a quart from them (what they use) to top it off. Hopefully, once the breather is fixed, I won't have to add any.

thanks Bob, I've been buying a Motul Synthetic 15w/50 oil from a bike shop close to me, but now I might look at the Mobil 1 as it gets a good rap from the test you supplied a link to. I'm not sure there is such a big difference in price anyway but if there is, it looks like the Mobil 1 seems to have good test results and might get my vote. cheers staffo

The point in the above article is that most of the quality fully synthetic oils don't have wear additives in any amount that would make a difference. I'll end up using what my dealer uses, but I can't see anything wrong with the Mobile 1 15W-50. It apparently tested better than most of the motorcycle oils in motorcycle testing.

Mobil and Amsoil are the best but motorcycle oils are designed for the higher temps and to go through the tranny and suspend the clutch dirt so the filter can catch it. There are many reasons besides friction modifiers not to put car oil in your bike. In a bike there are gears that shear car oil down, excessive heat compared to a car, and the clutch.

Any reasonable oil & filter combo changed at reasonable intervals is going to protect just fine.

Agreed, probably best to close this thread. Gourmet dog food isn't necessary any more nutritious. Buy what makes you feel better. I love my bike too.

I can see it going up after oil hit $150/barrell, but where is oil now, and how long does it take for the "trickle down" to bring the price of motor oil back down? It may never happen.....
