Sounds like you mean something around 4 hours or so away(?)... say around 300 miles? Our definition of "longer" distances seem to differ somewhat.
So, I'll re-phrase my earlier statement ...
My opinion as regarding my "longer" distances (normally 2-up) is that the SM or America (albeit do-able) do not fit this spec.
No, that just happens to be my up coming trip, little farther than that but not a really big distance. Have to remember I have ridden a hardtail from here to Cody Wyoming straight through about 2,050 miles so I think I have the long distance thing down. Not the only long trip but longest without stopping I have done. If my 650 TR6C did it and I was happy with the ride I see no reason my SM wouldn't do it and do it better.
