Hi,

I'm looking at putting a set of Dunstall replica's on my America to get a nicer sound than stock as opposed to cutting up my stock pipes. I found some old posts referring to these pipes and was able to find some YouTube videos with these pipes but not on an America or Speedmaster.

I'm wondering if anyone has a set of these on their America or Speedmaster and how they sound. I'd like some more volume and tone but can't run anything obnoxious loud as I leave for work at 06:30 and actually like my neighbours.

If someone has an audio clip or know where I can hear one, please let me know.

Thanks,

Lorne

the Dunstall replicia's are only 27" long with the mounting point midway on the muffler. They may look a little short on the bike and you would also have to fab up some brackets.

Don't get me wrong here, I love the look of the specialty spares and have read all the rave reviews for them, but at approx. $570 Canadian dollars, they're a little out of my price range for now. I can get the Dunstall replica's (for now) for $120 and as for fabbing up a bracket, that shouldn't be an issue as my best friend own's a metal fab/laser cutting shop so he'd be able to make me a nice stainless bracket for me.

Thanks for the info nonetheless

Lorne

If I may, what is your delima with removing 1 or 2 baffles from the stock pipes? I'm just thinking out loud here, but it's a free modification, and it'll do exactly what you want to do. I'm just sayin you should try it out first if you don't like it, you're not out any money, and you can still get the dunstalls.

I'll bet you like it though

My thought process behind not knocking out baffles in my stock pipes is to keep my stock pipes original if I need to put them back on. Currently we don't have any testing of sound levels here, but what the cops WILL do if they don't like you is slide their billy clubs up the exhaust pipe and if they don't hit anything, BINGO ticket. Ijust figured with the $120 for a set of Dunstall replica's, I could get a better tone and not beat up my stock pipes which are 3-400 bucks to replace. If I find that the Dunstall's won't work, I might end up removing a couple of baffles as you've suggested.

Well what you can do is this. Chevy605 buys stock pipes. You'd prolly end up about even if you sell them yours. He buys stock pipes, removes the baffles and resells them (I think). You might want to talk with him, and see. Maybe he'll let you see what the gutted stocks sound like, and make up your mind then. Either way... here's his link in the classifieds. He's looking for some stock pipes to buy.

It's always a good idea to hang onto your stock pipes because you never know when some power mad politician is going to force everyone to put them back on "for your own good".

That is what I have done. I'm running BUB slash cut pipes but saving the stock ones because I know that the day is coming when big brother will force me to put them back on.

if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

That's my reasoning behind wanting to run some aftermarket pipes as well. Unfortunately I have to look for ways to do things more 'on the cheap'... insurance up here is insane, I pay $1600 for a 6 month riding season, so spending another 600-1000 bucks for a set of pipes just isn't in the cards.

I have Emgo martini shakers on my '03 Speedy -- other than having to replace the packing with stainless steel wool (the fiberglass doesn't last for crap), they work great and sound awesome!

I used the Dunstall 'power' replicas for a few months. Sounds pretty good, but I wanted the Dunstall 'decibel' replicas because they are quieter with a bit of a puff along with the deeper tone. I gave the Power mufflers to Chy, and recently bought some Specialty Spares long slash cuts. The SS pipes are a bit louder than I wanted and they came cram packed with packing. I am thinking of dissecting the decibels and modifying the baffles to fit in the SS pipes. The Dunstall replicas have a long baffle made from thin perforated metal plate. The Power mufflers' baffles are straight through and the Decibels have a restricter plate welded halfway through the baffle for a much quieter sound. The Dunstalls all say they will fit a 1-3/4" header, but they will not fit a Speedy/America. You'll have to get some reducer tubing at an auto parts house to adapt to your headers. I used 130 main jets with them both.

Hey, Skillet, when you come up with a plan that knocks a few more db off the SS let me know. Mine are double packed and still just a tad loud for my liking but the performance is awesome. I've been toying with adding a layer of fiberglass to the empty portion of the pipe but so far none of my attempts look sturdy enough to hold up.

Well... it was a soggy day yesterday and couldn't get any yardwork done, so I broke down and took out the first two baffles in my stock pipes. Didn't really want to do it to my nice stock pipes, but there's no going back now! Those two baffles gone sure woke up the sound on the bike! Sounds good idling in the driveway and when I give it a little rev, but want to see what my riding buddies have to say about the sound, those pipes are so long can barely hear anything when riding. I can hear a slight rumble, but still just hear the wind and the engine sounds, but I KNOW that it's gotta sound better to others as opposed to the 'George Jetson' sound it was making. Thanks to the site, reading through all the debaffle posts it was about an hours work and done.... the second baffle is nothing pretty to look at, but it works. Now if I need more rumble, I can take the pipes off and go from the header end and drill some holes in the 3rd baffle, but for now I'm gonna leave it as is.

That MIGHT have been when I fired the bike up with the pipes off just to see what she sounded like.... to which my son told me to leave the bike like that!!!
