I personally had a master link fail on a 750 Honda. clip broke..came off..doesn't really mater the outcome was the same, in short order the chain came off and as it continued to follow the sprockets till it was done? It went through my crank case forward of the front sprocket. Last time I used a master link. In 1982 it was a $75 tig weld job (or what ever they use to weld aluminum) and paid help from an off duty mechanic to get my ride back on the road.
Lesson I learned? It only takes once to convince me I don't want it to happen again. Comes down to personal preference. RK ships them with Rivet links and suggest highly that they be used.
