I was wondering if anyone had a chain breaker and riveter tool that I could rent so I can install my new drive chain.

Cut the old chain off with a side grinder, or a hacksaw. Then place a solid piece of metal behind the new rivet and tap with a hammer. Heres a link on how to www.garagenight.tv/2008/09/

It came with a rivet type, and they are stronger.

Not to me , I have never had a clip style fail in over 30 years of riding, dirt or street so where is the worry? If it's put on correctly it won't go anywhere. The pins and side plates are just as strong and the clip holds them together, not much force on that.Had a chain fail with a few of those in it but it wasn't the clip style master that failed and the chain had more miles on it than any chain ever should.

+1! I've never had a chain on anything, ever, that didn't have a masterlink. Never broke a chain, NEVER! Always took the chains off the dirt bikes to clean & lube, I couldn't imagin the hassel if not for the masterlink. I've had some very powerful bikes (i.e. Kawasaki 450 single MX two stroke, and the H1 & H2),done some insane holeshots, but never broke a chain. (of course, I've never had a Boss Hoss)

That's what I did when replacing my chain last year. I used a drill with a grinder/cutter type bit.(I guess that is a side grinder). It sure was a lot faster. For me, the clip master link is better and it will be eaisier to change out the chain next time.

I bought a DID 525ZVM2. They don't make a master link to 'fit' it. It was the best DID I could buy. They said I could go about 300 miles on a lube, instead of the 200 on the stock chain. Plus, the wear rating was better.

Nope. Sorry Ian. The rivet links are stronger. But... It would likely never be an issue on these bikes. Not enough power to make it one.
I have seen chains that have come undone on Gixxers and 'busas that have failed at a clip style link.
Rivet links do, however, have to be installed correctly to gain the strength advantage. A pair of hammers won't do. If you don't have the right tool, then you are better off with a clip.

I don't agree Bill, the pins and side plates are the same on rivet or clip style links and there should be almost no side force on the link unless the wheel is not aligned correctly.

The diameter is the same on either rivet or clip style, so how can you say one is stronger than the other. One might argue that the clip style has longer pins to fit the clip, but it's still the same as the rivet inside to inside measurements. You can also say that the clip can come unclipped, which is possible, but what are you doing to an O-ring chain when you rivet the pins? You're just smashing the O-rings, which can also cause premature chain failure. I think Ian's experience with chains, and the lack there of for recommended chain replacement just shows us how much more reliable these parts are than what manufacturers recommend.

What I have said about my care opf chains is all true and the mileage I have gotten but everyone keep in mind that is with the X ring chain not a std chain with no seals. The std. chain with no seals would need to be cleaned and lubed often since there are no seals to keep lube in or dirt out.
I actually am impressed with the mileage I have gotten from this chain since I haven't maintained it at all. All the clip does is prevent the outer plate from working it's way off. As Aaron said above the clip is the only real difference between the 2 style master links and the clip can come off if not put on correctly, never saw one installed correctly come loose, not saying it hasn't happened, just have never seen it.

I totally agree.
I just turned 10k with the stock chain. It seemed like junk. I was having problems keeping it ajusted for more than a day. That is, if I was riding with my buddy that has a KZ. I guess hole-shots aren't good on them!
Anyway, the Triumph Service Manual or Owners Manual says something about lubing the chain every 200 miles. The DID web site said that I could go 300 miles on a lube with the chain I bought. There were times that I'd soak my chain in lube everyday with as little as 50 miles on it. The stock chain would start to get real loud after 100-200 miles on a lube.
How often should I lube this new chain?

Depends what type of chain you have. If it is an X ring do what you want. If it has no seals then clean and lube around every 500 or so miles, 200 to 300 is 1 days riding.

A good rivet-style chain comes with a spacer that is placed between the chain links and the side plate as you deform the master pins with a chain tool. In this scenario, you are not "smashing the o-rings" - the spacer prevents that. Keeping the lube in the chain, keeping dirt and grit off the chain, and avoiding hole shots and panic stops are the keys to long chain and sprocket life. Your results may vary.....

If you do a search for chain failures, you'll find all kinds of stories about clip type master links. I haven't been able to find one about rivet link failures. Again, these bikes don't have the torque load to really make it an issue. Unless, of course, it's installed incorrectly.
But on high powered motorcycles there are indeed side loading forces that can pop a spring clip.
That's why they're not allowed on race bikes.
So for me, rivets. Can't be too strong.

practically speaking, every 500 miles. each 500 or 000 appearance on the odometer. 300 miles is like every week or two. nowayiamlubingthechainthatoften. chain life is directly proportional to mpg. unfortunately an inverse relationship exists between chain life/mpg, and ear-to-ear grins. tween my two prefires I can get 51 mpg or 35 mpg. 35 is betterer fun.

I have seen rivet link failure in chains with clip style master links. A rivet link is only as strong as the way it is riveted, wrong tool can cause weak rivet, not knowing how to use the right tool can cause a weak rivet, operator can cause weak rivet. For the applications we are talking about one is as good as the other and the benefits of the clip style far out weigh any advantage of a riveted link. For our purpose the clip style is just as strong as the riveted style. I don't know about not allowing a clip style link in racing, my friend Fast Eddy (not from here) used to use them on his top fuel drag bike and I have seen his chains fail at every possible spot, clip style master link as well as any other link on the chain. One typr of failure didn't out number the other so I still say that a clip style is just as strong as a riveted style. The only reason they are not allowed on race bikes is because the rule makers like to make rules.
I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

Actually I have a perfect example of another set of racers who use clip style. Hill climbers use clip style in many cases I have seen. Those bikes burn race fuel and the chain takes one heck of a beating, not to metion the length of the chain.

As for chain lube intervals, my bottle of bel ray super clean says to lube every 250 miles. I don't. I lube it maybe 3 times a riding season which is 7k miles for me. I'm at 18k right not with the stock chain. I wonder what roadworthy has if it's the stock chain or not, because I think he is one of the top dogs in the horse power business on these bikes.

Still not a lot of HP in the world of bikes though. Not to take away from Dave or his efforts but our bikes are just not designed to be big HP machines and you will only gain so much. To get really big number you would need really deep pockets.

I was using Liquid Wrench Dry Lubricant which dries as a wax. I think that help mess up my stock chain. I have a 1/4 mile of gravel to get to my place, and I didn't want crap to flinge off onto my wheel and tire. I bought Liquid Wrench Cycle Chain Lube for my dirt bike. I think I'll live with the mess and just use that.

I've used liquid wrench, but didn't trust it to work. It flings of bad. I'm on this bel ray kick. It's not a wax, but almost dries as a super tacky grease. I really like it... no fling off. Check it out, you'll like it. I even like it on my dirtbike. web page

I also installed a new rear sprocket with that new D.I.D. chain. I bought it from New Speedmaster and it is slightly thinner than the stock one. Is that a problem?

As for lubes, I've tried several. The Bel-Ray super clean doesn't fling off, but it is ugly.
I just used some Maxima chain wax. This seems to be the best yet. Goes on clean, dries clear, doesn't fling off, doesn't attract dirt. Just follow the directions: Apply to warm chain, let set for 20 minutes before riding. I wipe off the excess before the first ride after an application.

Thinner sprocket can shorten chain life since the chain is riding on less surface area to spread out the force.

I personally had a master link fail on a 750 Honda. clip broke..came off..doesn't really mater the outcome was the same, in short order the chain came off and as it continued to follow the sprockets till it was done? It went through my crank case forward of the front sprocket. Last time I used a master link. In 1982 it was a $75 tig weld job (or what ever they use to weld aluminum) and paid help from an off duty mechanic to get my ride back on the road.
Lesson I learned? It only takes once to convince me I don't want it to happen again. Comes down to personal preference. RK ships them with Rivet links and suggest highly that they be used.

I've been using the MFR for a few years now. Clean and easy. No gunk build-up, road grime doesn't stick to it, and it's invisible.
As to rivet vs. clip master links - a lot of chain driven racing/sports machines use clip links. Not for security, but for ease of replacement. For security, you use a riveted master link. That clip has to flex to engage the grooved pin. Squeeze enough lube out of a sealed chain (what is erroneously called "stretch") and that clip can just as easily disengage. Do what makes you happy. I'll rivet my chains, thank you...
