I do have a tach on my TA. It is definitely useful for such comparisons. By the way, you can get sprockets for under $20. from newbonneville.com or bellacorse.com. The aftermarket sprockets are high quality but don't have the rubber on either side like the stock Triumph ones. I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not as I haven't had enough time to compare.
