Gidday Rev,
I had a 650 V-Star before my 09 America. I loved the V-Star - they have a rock solid engine and are easy to ride. But when I test rode the America I was sold. It handles better, no vibration, has 60% more power (than the 650) is even better built and will have a longer life than the V-Star.
However, I do find the America harder to ride at very slow speed on tight turning circles - the V-Star feels like it has a lower COG, and the chain drive is more of a hassle.
But I wouldn't go back - the Triumph is brilliant. Fuel mileage is better than the V-Star but not so much that you won't have to fill up every 180 miles or so.
