I was well on the to setting a new record for battery life when it died. So, I gotta get a new one. I charged it for a couple hours, then put the voltmeter on it. 12.48V, good enough. Then it dropped off at about .1V every 2 seconds down to 11.3 and it didn't have enough poopypower to start the engine.

I don't know what the record is but I purchased my bike in July 2002 and the battery is still cranking well! I don't put it on a battery tender or anything either. I have stored it in heated storage as well as unheated storage and when spring rolls around I turn the key on hit the starter and she cranks over and fires right up! On the other hand I have a 2006 KTM dirt bike that I just purchased battery # 2 for it and it stays in a heated basement at my buddies house. ????? I probably should knock on wood!!

That might be the record then. most last 3 to 5 years, mine would have been 6 in a few months.

Both our 04 batteries are fine still and never out of the bike. No heat over the PA winter, own 2 battery tenders but never used them. We will see how long they go.

Mine is 2 1/2 years old (24,000 miles) and still kicking the ole 790 over like a new one. I had started to wonder how long they last and if I should be proactive and have it changed out for a new one.
'06 TBA - Black, AI and Snorkel removed, K&N Drop In, Gutted Stock Pipes, 145/42, 2 turns out.

Me too. Replaced OEM battery after around 5 yrs but the replacement only lasted a year Must have been a duff. Fitted a new one but still regularly have starting problems. I've an alarm fitted which goes into 'safe' mode after only a couple of days after disconnecting my Optimate charger. Have tried cleaning the contacts on the battery, solenoid and starter motor. Not sure whether there's a slow drain somewhere? Know that it doesn't take much at all to drain the battery enough to cause problems though...

I'm on my 3rd battery too. I probably could've run the last one longer with just a recharge, but i only give 'em one shot at letting me down. I ain't getting stranded by a dead battery if i can help it!

Hey Dafydd, Disconnect your positive lead from your battery and put a multimetre set to amps in the line. If you get any reading you know you have a drain somewhere.

Thanks Frank, I'll look into that. Not sure how to disable the alarm to remove it from the equation though. Suppose I'll have to try and find out what drain the alarm should normally cause before I can determine whether there's a problem elsewhere? I'm not very good with electrickery...
