Depends on which way you look at things really.
If it foils a terrorist attack or identifies nonces then it's a winner.
Personally I couldn't care less if the Government knows my whereabouts because I'm really sure that they are not going to be interested that I popped into Tesco today and bought some groceries or that I watched the motogp on BBC iplayer.
On the other hand I do care if they lose information about me and that is a bigger concern.
In the end it's just a neighbourhood watch scheme on a bigger scale.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

I would believe such a system is already at work based on US soil, searching for key phrases and the like throughout any and all text based transmissions, and probably extending to a worldwide reach. I've heard a name for this system a few times, but can't recall it offhand. I agree it does tread very heavily upon privacy. On the other hand, if they're reading mine, they better get some no-doze. A little OT -- I was subjected to US DOT drug testing years ago. One can't deny that it is un-constitutional, in that the tested are proving themselves innocent prior to be accused of anything, but there was no way around it, and so it was generally accepted. I then went on to being appointed by default, as drug testing administrator for the fleet. (Obviously no back ground checks are required for the position ) I gotta tell you, reading the regs on US drug testing could make any law professor stick their head in the gas oven.

Some friends were arrested over 30 years ago for 7 or 8 lbs of red hash. It turns out illegal wire taps were the key to the arrests. The convictions stood, the time was served, and no compensation was made.

The trouble is, I just don't trust people in Government. I know all this tech can foil the nut cases and terrorists, but the potential for abuse is astronomic. I suppose that as long as the justice dept works seperate from the other two, we have some protection. but it still makes me uneasy.

Of course, this means taxes will increase to pay for it. But the government knows what's best for you, because they passed a law that says so.

There was an interesting idea posted at work about drug testing.... If people who work are subject to random drug tests, shouldn't people on welfare also be drug tested before they get their checks???

Well heck guys! If you would all just learn to live your lives according to my simple little credo here... ***Always follow orders without question, never say anything that could be at taken as "controversial" by others in any manner at all, always keep a low profile, and NEVER EVER say anything in a sarcastic manner because it always seems at least half the folks out there won't "get" that you are in fact being sarcastic.*** ...THEN, you guys will have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to ever worry about in the future!!!! (...or even back in 1984, for that matter)

A bill was proposed some years ago to drug test one of the state's legislatures. The bill was struck down as unconstitutional, yet the same state allows their department of labor to accept drug testing in the non-DOT workplace.
Do as we say...

I think it probably has more to do with the lack of drug screening prior to posting here than age.

Yeh, that combined with CCTV everywhere, compulsory ID card schemes, chips in vehicles and even in your wheelie bins! The way things are going I fear it's only a matter of time before compulsory energy, food and water allowance and curfews come into effect...

No one should have any expectation of 'privacy' when out in public. That includes using the 'public internet' (although there are ways to maintain your privacy and circumvent attempts to eavesdrop).

I have tin foil on my walls and I keep an empty bottle upside down on top of each of my door knobs. I also have pad locked containers in my cupboards and refrigerator with my food in them plus pad locks on the refrigerator and cupboeards themselves.
