"Altar of the Nation" The stones that make up the main body of the Altar come from all fifty states and from every United States President since Harry Truman. There is a stone from Plymouth, England where the Pilgrims left the Old World and one from Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts where they landed in the new. There are stones from the battlefields of Lexington, Concord, and Yorktown where the American Revolution began and ended. Three stones from the Parthenon in Athens and a stone from the ancient Colosseum in Rome are also embedded in the altar.

Greg, remember the windwills we rode past while heading south on I-81 after last years 08 NH Rally? Wouldn't mind taking a 20 mile, 1 hour side trip for lunch and then up 339 for a gander and photo-op.

Ever since I got my bike put back together I've been chasing electrical gremlins all over the place. I think I've finally got everything all sorted out. So as long as no more unseen issues come up with my bike and as long as I get the time off from both jobs I should be there thursday evening-ish. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

when we walked there! my eyeglasses had to be on top of the TV hutch at that Scottish Inn. You know hotels, the cleaning staff has no reason to be cleaning areas they cannot see. I'd bet they are still there too. Hum...Milford PA. Might have to side stand there for 20 minutes.

You got your rings in order now?

Screw the Village Diner...when in Milford, definitely go to the Milford Diner instead. It's 2 blocks up after 209 has you turn onto Broad St.

Rings are on but I haven't put the barrels back on yet. Ring compressor should be here Mon or Tue so I don't have to try Pat's hose clamp trick again (was too difficult the first time, hence the rebuild). Might have to locate a second pair of hands as well to help hold stuff in place.

Extremely off topic, and a yawn in the making:

When trucks were allowed to run 209, (an awesome shortcut) we used to call it "The Ho Chi Min Trail," or "The Trail." Weekday mornings would see lines of trucks miles long making their way north. The neighbors were not thrilled to have that much truck traffic on a rural road, and went into a tizzy to get them barred from 209. It is a difficult process at best to close a US highway to truck traffic, as the issue typically gets tied up in court for years. Apparently there was at least one very well connected neighbor, as Ronald Reagan, in his capacity as POTUS, closed The Trail to trucks in a matter of minutes with the stroke of a pen.
Ol' smilin' Ronnie.

Have to try that and see the Georges. The Village Dinner was an old Stainless Steel icon and as such, offered great ambiance at the price of good food...Nice waitress though with forthright personalities.

Not necessarily. Being as how we or rather I want to see the windmill farm up from Mahanoy City PA on 339, ( a short diversion) this is not extremely off topic at all!

Quote:

...and a yawn in the making:

What is was good for truckers just may be great for motorsicklist.

So Martin,
Hows about 54 from Mahanoy City East to 209 to Port Jervis? Is that the section called "The Ho Chi Min Trail"?

Another related question being, what yawn do you have for the route from Port Jervis to CT34? As it is we plan on riding 84 E to CT34.

This route is one idea of avoiding I-84 without thought to a scary word turnpike. I'll have to do some searching for toll cost I guess and factor that in.

Rob & Cathy RULE !!!!!
Although not showing of my sexy cold water nips could be a problem...

-----------

Moe, "The Trail" was CB radio parlance for the section of 209 between 80 & 84. Route 33 would also offer Trail access from 78. Traffic northeast bound could avoid the congestion and tolls of NYC & Northern Jersey by running 209 to 84 east, etc. More trivia - when 209 was first closed to trucks, the National Park Service built and manned a checkpoint to enforce the no trucks rule. The ban was off & on for a while. When the ban was off, the no trucks signs would be covered in burlap or trash bags. If the wind would blow off the burlap, trucks heading north would be turned around by the Park Service rangers, usually creating a very costly and time consuming detour. Been there. They may also have been lead to believe that I was after the pic-anic baskets...

[...and I was!]

I have no direct experience with the western half of the route map you posted, but would believe it will be very scenic on the NY side. Very slow, but beautiful scenery. The one point of interest I can think of on the CT side would be Yale Bowl, where the NY Giants played, I believe while The Jimmy Hoffa Cemetery was being built or worked on. There are also some world famous pizza joints near the Yale Bowl neighborhood.

With perhaps only one or two obscure exceptions, wherever you cross the Hudson River in NY for practical travel routes, you have to pay. (I Love NY!) At least it's a good looking bridge with a rich history. If I recall, Bear Mountain Bridge was the first suspension bridge with a concrete deck - a design later implemented in such technological wonders as the George Washington Bridge, and so on. It is very likely that the toll is $1 eastbound.

One minor hazard area - The Stevenson Dam on route 34 over the Housatonic river - at either end, trucks require most of the road to make the turns. Maybe it's better now - haven't been there for quite a while.

If y'all need a place to camp while northbound, I'll leave a light on. I'm probably off route though, in the very NW corner of CT.

Happy trails!

I've been watching this thread with hopes of a last-minute decision to make the run up to NH...and those hopes have been dashed by the NC legislature's annual budget decisions (err, indecisions?). Just a couple of weeks ago, it looked like I might suddenly have a ton of free time. But, I've just been told that not only will I still have a job, but I'll need to do more work for no more money because of anticipated cuts that we're hearing about. I suppose in these times, you have to be thankful just to have a job. NH will have to remain on my "bucket list," and I will make it up there sometime. It's looking like NY in September can be done though...

Everybody have a great time up there, and be safe. Post photos and stories for those of us who can't make it.

Will
