Where more HP pays off - weight or no weight - is high-speed acceleration. At highway speeds and above, the additional HP overcomes air resistance, and acceleration is much stronger than bikes with smaller motors, even if they're substantially lighter. Taken to extremes, this is why all the 'Vettes I ever built (models between '63 and '74) could walk away from any motorcycle of the day at speed.
