Hope it gets better for you FJ. Do you know what kind of spider it was?

As part of my "Hank Kimball" alter ego, I see a number of spiders pass across my desk for identification. To my knowledge we only have two truly poisonous spiders in Montana. The native black widow, a fairly quiet creature, more disposed to culverts, crawl spaces, well housings & cult movies from the 1950's. And the Aggresive House, or Hobo spider, a more recent immigrant from Washington and points west. Hobos prefer flat surfaces and seldom climb vertical surfaces. They are classified a "funnel web" spider due to their funnel shaped webs found in baseboard corners, cracks and the like. Not to say they can't end up in bedding. That's a classic cause of spider bites. It's my understanding and coffee induced opinion, that reactions to the other more common spider bites vary from person to person, somewhat like reactions to bee stings. The brown recluse doesn't naturally occur in these Montana, it's native to more southern regions and wouldn't do well surviving our winters. But could concievably be here as a seasonal "hitchhiker" in boxes and such. There are some cool identification websites showing the effects of verious spider bites. Class over, a quiz will be prepared for later in the week. jh

In my house, a spider is either a black widow, a brown recluse, or a tarantula (obviously not really any of those). I treat them all the same, and my wrath is swift.

We don't really know for sure if it was a spider (and certainly not what kind if it was a spider), but there doesn't seem to be any other explanation. My doctor really wants to figure it out, though, to help prevent this in the future.
Other than a few cob webs here and there, there are no recent signs of spiders anywhere in my house. I know we have a lot of spiders in this area, but I haven't actually seen any in the house in over a year. I usually try to spray some insecticide around the base of the foundation once or twice a year to keep them out.

Quick update: Started work again today at half time. If all goes well I'll be back at full time next week. Saw a dermatologist yesterday and seeing another doctor Thursday. My primary doc wants to figure out what cause this so it's more tests and more specialists.
Oh, and the tab for the 12 day hospital stay? $30k.

Ouch!! Glad you are on the mend but that's a sickening tab for the hospital.

Well, worst case scenario I'll have to pay $3000. Not great, but better than having no insurance.

Glad you're feeling better FJ. Kind of new around here but even I know your prowess. My ex-wife was bit on the eye by a spider and swelled up huge...in hindsight makes me laugh and evil smile
