I read here that the Thunderbird cush drive is a better replacement that the America one , has this been done or just a theory
Mine has done 80,000 K`s now after being shimmed at 19,000 K`s , but i think i will replace it this time

Yes it has been done several times and I think I remember someone posting that they ordered one and got the TBS part by default. Just don't forget you want the TBS and not new T bird.

Are you saying that the Thunderbird sport in differant to the standard Thunderbird or are you refuring to the new ThunderBird not realised yet

I just did it...mine wasnt bad but it was looser than it used to be. It felt like too much movement to me.
The new one feels good and is tight....but not too tight. Its a direct swap.
The part # is in the tech vault.

i used the t bird one and it was a huge improvement
(Former)05 BA tbike pipes, ai removed, Freak, mikuni hsr 42's, 904, ported/polished head, 1mm oversized valves

Something that I've noticed and wanted to share. I just changed my oil, and I went with mobil 1 4T. I think it was 10w-40, but can't remember. I had 20w-50 in before which was the mobil 1 v-twin. I absolutely love the 4t way better as it shifts smooth as glass right now. I'm very impressed with the difference. I'm in no way wanting to compare oils, only their weights. I only talk about the mobil 1 cause it's available at wal-mart, and relatively cheap. I too wanted to do the cush drive replacement, but after changing to this oil, it seems more managable. Thanks to whoever recommended this.

I have been saying either the 4T or the Amsoil for quite some time now. 2 best out there.
Is the 4T available at Wal Mart? I know the other stuff is but didn't know the 4T was.

You're rackin my brain Ian. I'm picturing the walmart shelf, and they've got (left to right) Mobil 1 V-Twin, Mobile 1 10w-40 4t??!?, Castrol 4T, and Castrol 2T. Ok found the link.

I just (well, several weeks ago) installed the TBS cush drive. What a pain. Really tight. I had "shimmed" my old cush and it took some time to thoroughly clean the inside of the hub. Then some silicone lubricant was enough to get everything back together.
Now if I could get healthy and it would stop snowing here I might get to try it out.

It's Mobile 4T racing oil that Triumph sells. I didn't think Wal Mart carried it.

I have had the Thunderbird cush drive rubber in my bike for 31,000+ miles after the stock one wore out at 35,000 miles. The Thunderbird{not sport) is a slightly tighter fit than stock.
A cush drive with some play in it is still going to jerk the final drive no matter what oil you're using, so either shim it or get a new one. Excessive cush drive play CAN be hard on your gears. And there is no tolerance limits, there should be zero play.

I had an excessive amount of play in my cush-drive after 3000 miles!!! (07 Speedy) I took it to the dealers, they agreed to replace it, no questions asked. After another 3000 miles and if anything, this one is even worse.
However, my dealer is now saying that according to Triumph the amount of play in my wheel is normal and are refusing to change it. I don't have a workshop manual, does anybody know if Triumph list any tolerances or if any freeplay is normal in regard to the cush drive?
I mentioned fitting a TBS cush-drive to try and solve the problem but they are only willing to entertain that idea if I pay for all parts and labour even though bike is still under warranty.

Glenn, I'm surprised the dealer didn't replace your stock cush drive with the Thunderbird one. This has been standard practice for years. My original one was replaced (Thunderbird) on warranty by my dealer at 8700 miles due to excessive play. I now have over 16000 on the bike with no noticeable play.

You're right... I know I probably need to replace my cush drive, but when shifting between gears, there is a very noticeable difference in "shick", and "CLACK!!!"
Where shick = mobile 1 4t 10w-40, and CLACK!!! = mobile 1 v-twin 20w-50.

Bonfire Boy, I just checked in the Triumph Workshop Manual. All it says is to inspect the cush drive for wear and replace as necessary. What ever that means.

Put a TBS cush drive in two weeks ago, big difference. Worth it even if I did have to use a four pound dead blow mallet to install it

The TBS is much better. Mine was replaced with the TBS on warranty 2 years ago as the stock one had a lot of slop. My bike is in the shop now for it's yearly service 2 years later and no slop on the TBS one.
