I have the same experience, 2 years with cut bottom and no problems.
Cutting the airbox bottom out will give you more air to the carbs, thats a fact.
I screwed up my UNI filter and had to replace it with a new filter.
Did put the new filter in without opening the filter bottom up and noticed the bike starving for air.... cut the bottom out and the bike is breathing better again.
So it will give you more air, balancing that with the correct jetting will get you a better performance of the bike.
I don´t think you gain a lot of HP by this mood alone but enough to make it wortwhile..and it is totaly reversible at the cost of a new air filter.
