I recently removed the airbox and put in new XS air filters. From what I've read on this forum I needed to rejet, so I took the bike to a shop (not a triumph dealer) because I didn't want to eff up the carbs by not doing it right. When I got the bike back I immediately noticed that my bike was running like crap, ( not accelerating properly or sluggish, engine sounding like it was missing here or there, strange popping sound). When I asked the mechanic about it he told me,"Oh that's normal when you are dealing with an open air system." But for some reason I don't believe him and think he didn't do the rejet right. Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do to remedy?
Thanks a lot.

He screwed up your jetting. These bikes run flawlessly when jetted correctly. Find out what jets he used and compare that to the jetting calculator and you will know if it's even close. Doesn't sound like it.

120 sounds way too small for airbox removed and off road pipes. What size pilots do you have, 42's would probably be needed too. Save your money and follow dinqua's directions, it's a complete walk through with pics
here is the link http://www.dinqua.com/Triumph/carbs0.html

Dragonaut,

I just posted a question today about the XS filters in another tread and if you have them on your bike it kind of answers the question about fitment.

Do you have any pictures you can post of them on the bike?

Quote:

he says 120

that´s just to funny.. you should have at least 145-150 for main jets with that setup

they fit pretty well but you will need to get wider compression bands, the ones they include are a little too thin and they will slip around and possibly tear the rubber when you tighten them to the carbs.

I think so, I know I went with the 2 1/2" mounting, so whatever that is in metric.

dragonaut , what pipes are you running? 120 is a stock jet that should already have been in there. If the calculator said 154 you probably need 150 to 155 depending on where you live. Might want to adjust the pilot screws too.

Ok I would think with TORs depending on what incarnation they are would probably be around 145 to 150 depending on where you live but this is just a guess and only a dyno will tell you for sure.

Anyone who says "Oh that's normal" when it's obvious he screwed up loses all rights to the title "mechanic"...

2 1/2" = 63.5 mm. I think you bought too big of filters. The XS filters are nice. especially for the $$$. 54mm are needed.

Hey thanks everybody for all the help! I'm not sure if i got dicked by this "mechanic" or if the guy was just an idiot and didn't know what he was doing. but seriously saying, "oh thats normal" when my bike sounds like it's going to take a giant crap doesn't give me confidence in his ability to do any thing.
funny thing though, I followed dinqua's instructions and once I got the carbs apart I found out what most already know, that he put the exact same size jets on...120's really? Also I do remember saying," you know I do a lot of reading on this forum and the general consensus is that 150-155 mains will be good.
So as the ol' saying goes if you want something done right do it yourself. I've already ordered the new mains online and I should get them next week some time. on a side note does anyone know where I can find long front brake lines? I put 12" apes on and everything fit neatly except the brake line.

Speaking of air filter mods, I'm considering cutting out the bottom of my airbox. I'm running gutted stock pipes with 4" baffles at the inlets. Will a simple airbox mod like this be worthwhile? Also, I ride in all types of weather, including heavy rain. Will an open airbox create problems?

I've always heard that cutting a hole in the airbox is not the best idea, it'll get water in it, plus it probably won't make that big of a difference. And I'm pretty sure you'd need to rejet any way. All I did was bought a piece of aluminum from the hardware store, bolted the battery box to said aluminum and moved that to where the airbox was and secured the carbs to the frame. It wasn't too difficult I just needed to rejet and tune the carbs properly. which I'll do this week sometime.
Anywho I hope that was a decent answer for ya.

I don't understand exactly what you did. What's a XS filter?

Had my airbox bottom cut out for 2 years now. Never had a problem. I ride in almost all weather. Lots of monsoons last summer. Yes there is some improvement but not much.

Thanks for the link, Johann! Those flters sure are less expensive than the K&Ns.

Did you remove the internal snorkle also? I'm just wondering why the airbox wouldn't be nearly as good as pods, assuming the bottom is opened up and all the snorkles are removed.

I have the same experience, 2 years with cut bottom and no problems.

Cutting the airbox bottom out will give you more air to the carbs, thats a fact.

I screwed up my UNI filter and had to replace it with a new filter.

Did put the new filter in without opening the filter bottom up and noticed the bike starving for air.... cut the bottom out and the bike is breathing better again.

So it will give you more air, balancing that with the correct jetting will get you a better performance of the bike.

I don´t think you gain a lot of HP by this mood alone but enough to make it wortwhile..and it is totaly reversible at the cost of a new air filter.

This was an early mod, and in my opinion, not really worth it. I used a hole saw and cut a 1 1/4" hole in the airbox and in the filter. A K&N to be accurate. I ride in the rain now and then and I also ride to work every chance I get, and there is a lot of dirt/dust where I work. Initially I noticed a slight improvement, but the increased gunk on the filter negated that in a short time. I plugged the hole with a 1 1/4" button plug and lived happily ever after.

I live on a dirt road and have never had that issue of it gunking up. But i also added a piece of air filter material covering the hole. When i clean the K&N i also clean the other material.

I have since gone back to the stock filter. Cleaning and drying and re-oiling the K&N just isn't worth the time involved - for me anyway. Like I said, there's a lot of dust and dirt where I work. I clean the stock filter with my air compressor every oil change and replace it every 2nd oil change. It gives me a reason to spend a few $$$ at my dealer, and that's a good thing.
