Stock 790 cams. I'm getting a set of Fred's regrind cams, he thinks I should pick up a few more horse and a lot more torque with those.

Dave,
Great numbers!
Certainly looks to be worth the $$. Now Im watering at the mouth for a set of his modded carbs.

What was your AF ratio? You said you needed to tweak it.
Did the carbs come pre-jetted by Fred? Too rich, too lean?

I used the same jet setup as my stock carbs had 45/155 with 2 shims under the needles. I need to drop the needle one shim, and maybe go one size bigger on my main. I plan on talking to my Triumph dealer/ mechanic this afternoon, show him the charts, and see what he suggests. I ran this with the stock spring in, I will be going back to the lighter Kawasaki spring. My biggest problem was that it was rich in my cruising range, at about 4000 rpm I was at like 11, 11.5, so hopefully the spring lets the slide be open a touch more and drop the needle 1 shim to fix that. I'm lean up top too, so maybe a 157 or 160 is in order. After I get some tech support, I'll post what was recommended.

Don't forget that Fred dyno'ed these on bone stock bikes and picked up 4-5 hp with no other mods.

Do you know about what the turn around times are going to be once the carbs would be shipped out to him? 8HP sounds great!

Fred says 1 week turnaround. Here is his cell number, tell him I told you to call. 770-572-9098

Real nice guy, really wants to put out affordable power upgrades. He's very much about most bang for the buck.

Excellent! Excellent results Roadworthy!!
Fred called me last me last night asking me , "how much I think it was the gain with the bored out carbs",my answer was "8 HP",then he said +that's exactly right, awesome guest", my answer. "no Fred, I read it in the Forum"

Just out of curiosity, who else is making max torque at the rev limiter? I thought it would have dropped off, but it was still going up when it hit the limit.

here is my air/fuel mix, same jet set up as what I had before, just way more lean now because of all the extra air

I would like to get around 13 all the way across.... right now at cruising speed (about 4000 rpm) its really rich, down near 11 so I need to get that corrected too.

reading along on this, really impressive, and at a reasonable price too. But I keep hearing in the back of my head 'this looks like a DIY project'. Unless I am missing something, a 2mm bore job, deburr, swirl finish and make a new butterfly to size, and polish the slide. An afternoon project. Or it could be a good way for me to really f -up my carbs, and save nothing.
It is certainly a very attract way to pick up some hp.

I guess if you're a machinist who has access to the tools, then it may be a DIY. Fred ruined several sets of carbs perfecting what he does before he found out what works best. I leave things like this to the professionals, especially when you look at the cost of replacement parts if you do f it up.

THe machine work is no problem, the other unknown details are where the potential goat F-k lies. With the low cost I will probably just send the carbs to Fred rather than roll the dice.

I have decided to send Fred my carbs but 1st I want to make sure the manifolds have been perfected before removing from my bike and shipping them out. Still waiting for results.

And here are a couple pics. The fit is perfect, they are solid, no more carb wobble at idle. You can see where Fred tapered the cut on the boot side of the manifold from top to bottom to match the stock 17 degree angle. These should work just fine with the stock air box, mine is removed. Since there are no more manifold rubbers, you could get away with running pods with no carb support, they are in there good. I'm going to take it for a spin in a while and see what the difference is. The dyno should tell more than my butt though.

Those look really good! What are the black flanges between the manifolds and the carb bodies? Are they painted aluminum?

I was assuming a harder rubber if theyre being sealed with a hose clamp around the carb output.

Seems like you still would want a carb brace on there though just to keep the weight off that hose clamp joint?..no?

I mean Ive ridden around for a while before I realised I needed a carb brace that the previous owner never put on. So i know its not a big deal really. Just seems like the brace wasnt in the way or hurting anything...no?

Yeah, they are rubber, but these are a lot more solid than the stock rubber manifolds. My carbs are still braced, but it probably doesn't need it. Even without the brace, you can put some pressure on the carbs before they will move.

Looks like really good work!! What is the principal behind the intakes. I've been following along and see how the carb work changed the fuel flow, same idea on the intakes? 8 hp is a sweet gain for $350. How much were the intakes?

Looks great, Dave. Like the choke knob too!

Basically, the stock intake manifolds are a choke point on our fuel delivery system. I don't know if overall velocity is down, but flow is up. I'm not all technical savvy about these, I can only go by hard numbers on a dyno machine. I'm not sure how much the intakes were, I'll look it up and let you know. Fred ported my stock manifolds, they are in the classifieds right now, I think he said he would do that for people that don't buy the intakes for 70-80 bucks, please don't quote me on that, we talk about a lot of things... anyway, my ported stock ones are for sale.

My best guess is the machined intakes alone won't make any more power over the ported stockers; but so what, they are way trick & great eye candy.

I didn't have the ported stock manifolds on during my last dyno, so I think there will be an improvement in power.

I know, I need to get the carbs tuned in (again) since now there is more air coming through. Hopefully by early next week I'll have time to get a run done.

I would have to agree with this statement. When I did my head work this winter, I work backward out and match ported the maniflds to the heads and rubbers to the manifolds and rubbers to the carbs. There was a lot of material that needed to be removed from the manifolds and the rubber boots were even worse, very restrictive and horribly mismatched.
These new manifolds are certain to be an improvement over stock. A dyno between between ported and freds would be interesting. Does he have anything test results?

Next week when I go back for another dyno run, it will show any difference between the stock (not ported) intakes and the new billet ones. I didn't have the ported stock intakes at the time of my last dyno.

That is what I meant by "blueprinting" back when I posted my dyno numbers and got jumped on saying I couldn't get that much power out of a stock bore engine. I have since declined to post my numbers.

Am I interpreting the earlier dyno results correctly - the HP gains begin at 7K?
